Heart Like Mine
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yeah, we fight too much,
How'd we ever get so messed up?
Every night, we say the craziest things
You know our words they once had wings.
Now it's all covered up
In double-talk and lies
When I look in your eyes.
Now it's all covered up
In double-talk and lies
There's a stranger looking back
When I look in your eyes.
I just want to find a heart like mine
I just want to find a heart like mine
A heart like mine, a heart like mine.
You call me a fool, 'cause I still feel the same.
You say that your love has changed,
Ah! Here we go again
Close your eyes tell me what do you see
Do you still remember me?
Like some Mexican diplomat
After the fact
Air-brushed from history
Swept under the mat.
I just want to find a heart like mine
I just want to find a heart like mine
A heart like mine, a heart like mine.
And as I walk out the door
I step into a dream.
The world's quiet and I feel free,
But things are never what they seem
But then I hear you call
And warn myself, now don't go back
But slow motion attacks
Like some Mexican diplomat
After the fact
Air-brushed from history
Swept under the mat.
I just want to find a heart like mine
I just want to find a heart like mine
A heart like mine, a heart like mine.
The song "Heart Like Mine" by Blue Rodeo is a reflective piece about a relationship that has gone wrong. The opening lines of the song describe the distance between two people who were once close, and how they have become disconnected through fighting and hurtful words. The lyrics suggest that their relationship has deteriorated to the point where both parties are no longer able to communicate honestly and openly, but instead rely on "double-talk and lies". The use of the metaphor "there's a stranger looking back when I look in your eyes" highlights the sense of alienation and confusion that arises when communication breaks down in a relationship.
Despite the frustration and sadness expressed in the song, the singer hopes to find someone with a "heart like mine". This repeated refrain suggests that the singer is searching for a connection with someone who shares his values and emotions, and who is able to understand him without judgement or blame. However, the bridge of the song reveals a sense of ambivalence, as the singer describes the conflicting desires to both leave the relationship and to return to it. The metaphor of a "Mexican diplomat" being "airbrushed from history" suggests that the singer feels erased or ignored within the relationship, and is struggling to maintain a sense of identity and agency.
