Is It You
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I wonder
And still it makes me laugh
Is it you
That I'm looking for
Don't turn away so fast
And while you were talking
Wide-eyed I fell asleep
As sweet
Is it you
Who whispered
Into my hazy soul
Is it you
Who makes the flowers bloom
On the tenement windowsill
In a hotel room
A TV glows
And songs are exchanged
Drunkenly chasing the ghost
Of eternity
There's a drunk on the sidewalk
Trying to look unconcerned
And the dead eyed motel blonds
Wait in line for their turn
Is it you
Who laughs
When all the other dogs snarl
Is it you
Just because you listened for a while
And with this buzz of electricity
Still ringing in my ears
I wonder
Is it you
I wonder
Is it you
Blue Rodeo's song "Is It You" is a reflective, introspective track that ponders the question of whether or not the person the singer is searching for is actually the person they're with or if they're still out there, waiting to be found. The opening lines, "Is it you? I wonder / And still it makes me laugh," set the tone of the song as one of both uncertainty and amusement. The singer is unsure of their own feelings, yet they can't help but find humor in their own confusion.
Throughout the song, the singer continues to question whether the person they're with is truly the one they're looking for. They reference small moments of connection and beauty, such as the flowers on a windowsill in a tenement building or the way that one person's laughter can cut through the tension of a room, but ultimately they're left wondering if there's something more out there.
The song takes on a more melancholic tone towards the end as the singer describes a scene in a hotel room, where a collection of strangers are passing time together in a boozy haze. Even in this moment, the singer is still searching for something more, something that they can't quite name. The final line, "I wonder / Is it you?" leaves the listener with a sense of uncertainty, mirroring the singer's own emotions.
Overall, "Is It You" is a beautifully-crafted and introspective song that captures the complexities of human emotion and the uncertainty of navigating relationships.
