It Could Happen to You
Blue Rodeo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They broke off the locks and they opened the doors
Fixed up the windows and painted the floors
Grew a little garden outside in the rust and sand
Raised up the roof till it touched the sky
Picked up the pieces that were left to die
Brought this building back with a healing hand

When you see trouble
You're bound to move in on the double
You leave your mark upon everything
In your head those Liberty Bells still ring
But we know that you don't even mean
A thing you say

So you brought in the army to do your job
Kicking in doors and swinging their clubs
Back in the morning to watch
Themselves on the news
You're doing the bidding of the money man
If it turns out right they'll call you friend
One little favour how could you really refuse

Oh my heart is sinking
Same old useless worn out thinking
You live your life in the court of kings
Bow to the ruler and kiss the ring
But we don't even understand a thing you say

It could happen to you
It could happen to you
It could happen to you sometime
When you least expect it
Done by the ones that you never suspected
All your bills come due
It could happen to you

You really got to wonder why you did it for
Cause you don't need an army
To move out the poor
You brought it out once I know
You could bring it again

Oh my heart is sinking
Same old useless worn out thinking
Live your life in the court of kings
Count your money as the Raven sings
Safe and sound when the wrecking ball swings
But all your riches won't mean a thing someday
It could happen to you
It could happen to you
It could happen to you

Overall Meaning

"It Could Happen to You" by Blue Rodeo is a critique of those in power who use their influence to oppress others. The first verse describes the process of repairing a rundown building, which symbolizes the potential for positive change in a community. However, the second verse expresses the frustration of the singer with those who use their power and influence to cause harm. The line "So you brought in the army to do your job" refers to the use of force by those in power to suppress perceived threats, even when those threats may be peaceful dissent.

The chorus is a reminder that anyone, even those with power and influence, can fall victim to unexpected circumstances. The coda emphasizes the emptiness of wealth and power in the face of mortality, suggesting that those who seek these things at the expense of others are guilty of a kind of moral blindness.

so for people who may not know....this is the story of the gladstone hotel in parkdale, toronto a prominent old fixture in a comunity often considered an eye sore.
it housed many poor people who had little more than a room .
one day it was decided to save the building and revive the neighborhood....they would evict the tennants slap some paint...and turn the place into a luxury hotel ....with the help of the army they did just that......their concept was to create a hotel / with an art gallery where the tavern was downstairs. or something like that .......however the $ wasnt there.....and plans fell short....people were left literally homeless.... theres a documentary about it if you research the gladstone hotel
theres a little more to the story than ive described....its worth researching...if ur into it....blue rodeo are parkdales hometown heros....they made their hay playing clubs up n down queen st w
