Over Me
Blue Rodeo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And everyone you meet
The way you light your cigarette
The way you spill your drink
Every kiss you steal
And every heart you break
Every smile you leave
On a stranger's face
And you wish you could remember
Your dreams when you wake
‘Cause now everything
Feels like a big mistake
And you're wondering
Why can't this world be more
More like the one you were meant for
And you're wondering
Why can't this love be more
More like the love you were meant for
Sometimes it tears you apart
When you have to leave
The one love you want
It makes you feel like
It's all a lie
You can't believe he said
Goodbye
And you wish you could remember
Your dreams when you wake
‘Cause now everything
Feels like a big mistake
And you're wondering
Why can't this world be more
More like the one you were meant for
And you're wondering
Why can't this love be more
More like the love you were meant for
The lyrics of Blue Rodeo's song "Over Me" express feelings of longing and dissatisfaction with the world and love that surrounds the singer. The verses describe various actions and interactions with other people that seem to leave a mark on them - the way someone lights a cigarette, spills a drink or steals a kiss. These moments are fleeting, but they seem to contribute to a sense of disappointment and confusion. The repetition of "you're wondering" highlights the singer's questioning and yearning for something more - a better world, a more meaningful love.
The chorus emphasizes the contrast between the singer's desires and reality. The world and love they were "meant for" are seemingly unattainable ideals, while everything around them feels like a "big mistake." The final lines of the chorus express the pain of separation from someone they love and the feeling of betrayal when that person says goodbye. The longing for a more fulfilling life and love is intensified in the face of loss.
Overall, the song portrays a sense of disillusionment and melancholy that comes from a gap between what one wants and what one experiences. The singer's thoughts and emotions are conveyed through vivid descriptions of everyday interactions and a repeated questioning of why things can't be different.
