Does Anyone Love Me Now
Blue Roses Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I know we're too far away when I see besteepled pains
Nothing is concealed
Nothing is revealed by the brow of a hill
I believe in plans
And I believe in maps that you drew
Sitting next to me
I didn't see the moon hanging in the sky
And I need it's cool, pale face
To believe in this place and to believe your lies
Imagination, go! And free me from your secrets
Heavy and cold as stone
Well does any one love me?
'Cause I asked the deep sea
But it wouldn't speak to me
My darling I'm sorry
And I tried so hard
So long, so long
By the time I woke up
Then your were gone
And on the way back home
Our wandering eyes met fleetingly in window glass
And we're etched on a block of night
It's something that I will treasure
And you'll just let pass
I will just lie in wait
If only to hear the stories
You don't seems to know how to tell
Oh does anyone love me?
'Cause I asked the deep sea
But it wouldn't speak to me
My darling I'm sorry
In "Does Anyone Love Me Now?", Blue Roses seems to be singing about the search for love and connection, and the sense of isolation that can come when those things feel elusive. The opening lines suggest a feeling of being lost, physically and emotionally: "When we were on the way/I know we're too far away when I see besteepled pains" -- the singer is far from home and perhaps feeling unmoored or adrift. She goes on to say that "nothing is concealed/nothing revealed" by the landscape around her. It's as if the world is a blank slate, offering no clues or comfort.
Despite this, the singer still believes in plans and maps -- in the idea that things can be charted and figured out. She may be clinging to this idea in order to find some stability in her life. The next verse brings up the moon, which is often associated with romance and passion. The singer seems to rely on the moon as a symbol of hope -- but when she doesn't see it "two nights in a row," it's as if all hope is lost. She needs "its cool, pale face/to believe in this place and to believe your lies." It's possible that there's someone in her life who she wants to believe in, but who she suspects may not be telling her the truth.
The chorus brings up the question of whether anyone loves her -- an incredibly vulnerable and human question. She asks the deep sea, a metaphor for something vast and mysterious, if anyone loves her -- but "it wouldn't speak to me." The ocean is silent and unfeeling, like the universe itself. The singer is left alone with her doubts and fears. In the final verse, the singer seems to be saying goodbye to someone -- "by the time I woke up then you were gone." She's left with memories of their time together, which she treasures even though the other person doesn't seem to care. She's willing to wait and listen for their stories, but she's starting to feel like there may not be anyone out there who loves her.

And I tried so hard
I put forth a great effort
So long, so long
For a lengthy period of time
By the time I woke up
When I finally became aware
Then you were gone
You had already left
And on the way back home
While returning home
Our wandering eyes met fleetingly in window glass
Our curious gazes briefly intersected in the reflection of a window
And we're etched on a block of night
Our memories are preserved in the darkness of the night
It's something that I will treasure
These memories will be something that I cherish
And you'll just let pass
While you may forget them easily
I will just lie in wait
I will be patient and wait for something
If only to hear the stories
Mainly just to hear the tales
You don't seem to know how to tell
You struggle to retell those stories
Oh does anyone love me?
Is there anyone out there who loves me?
'Cause I asked the deep sea
I implored the vast ocean for answers
But it wouldn't speak to me
But it gave me no response
My darling I'm sorry
My apologies to my dear one

I'm glad this version still exists online. I prefer it over what's on the album. The tempo and emotion is far superior.
