Sleep
Blue and Holding Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The faded handles on the doors
I don't know if I can take it anymore
From what I've seen a crowded scene to get
Through my head
So I fall back in bed
And I
Close my eyes
For the last time tonight
Before I find
See
Colors and textures
That come with me on my journey
Back in time
(Oh)
Stand on the sky and face the moon
Break on out of my fantasy cocoon
And I just knew there's nothing new to go
Through my room
So I leave it up to you
I saw it
In my mind
You said to me
So did (I)
So did I
But you are me
Saw it
With my eyes
How can that be
Falling (die)
Through the night
I'm fast asleep
Oh if I could
I'd stand on top the line
That divides my mind
And I'm alright
I'm good
I'm just waiting for the word
To come back with the world
Drawn across my eyes
Stumbling and tripping in
Consciousness giving in
To a heavy, heavy heart no it's my part
I keep on reliving it
It's kinda nice isn't it
To lose from the start
You've got what I want
This is my part
(This is my part)
I'm so far gone
(I'm so far gone)
I lost from the start
(Lost from the start)
You've got what I want
(You've got what I want)
This is my part
(This is my part)
I'm so far gone
(I'm so far gone)
I lost from the start
(You've got)
You've got what I want
Saw it
In my mind
You said to me
So did
So did I
But you are me
Saw it
With my eyes
How can that be
Falling

Through the night
I'm fast asleep

Overall Meaning

The song Sleep by Blue and Holding focuses on the feeling of being lost in oneself and the various emotions that come along with it. The lyrics begin with the image of faded handles on the doors, symbolizing the difficulty of moving forward and the overwhelming feeling of being trapped in a crowded scene. The singer knows that they can't keep going anymore, and fall back into bed with the intention of giving up for the night. As they close their eyes, they see colors and textures that take them on a journey back in time, and they transcend reality to stand on the sky and face the moon. This dreamlike state is one of escape and detachment from reality, a place where there is nothing new for them to face, but also a place of isolation.

The song takes a turn as the singer realizes that they are not alone in this disjointed state of mind. They are joined by someone who is a part of them, as they sing "you said to me, so did I, but you are me". Together, they see the world through their mind's eye and fall into a deep sleep, allowing themselves to escape and feel free from everything. The lyrics of the song are simultaneously sad and comforting, as they deal with themes of isolation, detachment, and loss, while also exploring the power of the mind's ability to find solace and refuge within oneself.

i don’t know what it is about this specific video but it helps me fall asleep when i don’t think i’ll be able to.

the past few months have been hell for me. my grandpa has cancer and just recently had surgery for it again, the anniversary of losing one of my friends in high school just passed, the birthday of a deceased family member was a few weeks ago, and another death anniversary is coming up.

some days i can’t find the energy in me to care. to get out of bed. to eat. to smile. but i can’t sleep either.

this video, the comments section, the music… it makes me feel less alone. less hopeless.

to anyone reading this. thank you for being here.
