Currently, the group comprises singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999.
While Blues Traveler is best known among fans for their improvisational live shows, the general public is most familiar with the group from their Top 40 singles "Run-Around" and "Hook". They gained mainstream popularity after their fourth studio album four, released in 1994. Sheehan's death and Popper's struggle with obesity put a damper on the group's success, and A&M dropped the band in 2002.
Cara Let The Moon
Blues Traveler Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The club rats scurrying away
And closing out and closing in
It's rare that something then begins
With promises like shining lights
Amidst the dawn of dying night
Through ringing amps and flattened beer
And all my cues for getting out of here
But Cara let the moon come in
And windowsills again have room
Cara let the moon come in
And for a time I'm high as noon
Cara let the moon come in
And I was sad I had to run
But Cara let the moon come in
And past upon the evening sun
Now I'm an old and broken me
Too many rides upon the wind
That carries hawks across the sea
To hunt and shiver for their sins
Too many dreams are left to stand
Until the tide can knock them down
But remembering I reach my hand
In case a few are still around
Cause Cara let the moon come in
And windowsills again have room
Cara let the moon come in
And for a time I'm high as noon
Cara let the moon come in
And I was sad our set was done
But Cara let the moon come in
And past upon the evening sun
So pass the bottle, Pack the bowl
Let's swap our tales of rock n'roll
We have until the engine strums
And the Prevo sails to Kingdom Come
Cara let the moon come in
And windowsills again have room
Cara let the moon come in
And for a time I'm high as noon
Cara let the moon come in
And a profoundness had begun
But Cara let the moon come in
And past upon the evening's son
In these lyrics, Blues Traveler describes a moment in Brooklyn on a Saturday night when the energy of the city is fading and the club-goers are dispersing. The mention of promises and shining lights represents the hope and excitement that can be found amidst the end of the night. The singer acknowledges that his cues for leaving are present, but something unexpected happens.
Cara, presumably a person or perhaps a metaphorical representation of a receptive and open mindset, allows the moon to come in. This imagery suggests that Cara brings a sense of calm and beauty into the situation, and the windowsills, which may have been cluttered or crowded, once again have empty space. This symbolizes a new beginning or opportunity.
The singer expresses their happiness and contentment, feeling high as if it were noon. This suggests a feeling of euphoria or being in a positive headspace. However, there is a sense of sadness because the singer knows they have to leave at some point. Yet, through Cara's influence, they are able to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the setting sun.
As the lyrics progress, the singer reflects on their past experiences and acknowledges their current state of being old and broken. They have been through many challenges and have taken many risks. The reference to hawks hunting and shivering for their sins suggests a connection between their own struggles and the natural order of the world. They recognize that many of their dreams have not yet come to fruition, but they reach out in hope that some still remain.
The third paragraph introduces a shift in the narrative, turning towards the camaraderie and bonding that comes with sharing stories and memories of the rock n' roll lifestyle. As they pass the bottle and pack the bowl, the group swaps their tales. They have a limited amount of time before their journey ends, represented by the engine strumming and the Prevo (presumably a tour bus) sailing off to the unknown.
In the final chorus, the singer once again calls upon Cara to let the moon in, emphasizing the importance of her presence and influence. The windowsills are once again empty, symbolizing the opportunity for new beginnings. The singer once more feels a profoundness, suggesting a sense of deep meaning or significance. The evening's sun, representing the end of a day or experience, passes by, signifying the transient nature of life.
Overall, these lyrics explore the themes of finding beauty and hope within endings, appreciating moments of serenity and connection, and acknowledging the passage of time. The presence of Cara and the moon symbolize the possibility of renewal and inner peace amidst the challenges of life's journey.
