Currently, the group comprises singer and harmonica player John Popper, guitarist Chan Kinchla, drummer Brendan Hill, bassist Tad Kinchla and keyboardist Ben Wilson. Tad Kinchla and Ben Wilson joined the band following the death of original bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999.
While Blues Traveler is best known among fans for their improvisational live shows, the general public is most familiar with the group from their Top 40 singles "Run-Around" and "Hook". They gained mainstream popularity after their fourth studio album four, released in 1994. Sheehan's death and Popper's struggle with obesity put a damper on the group's success, and A&M dropped the band in 2002.

And ask for directions
Can you count on the answers
That you would receive
If you've ever been taken
By that passed along pay back
Why ask in the first place you might not believe
But I won't be confined to road maps
And I'd rather be lost
Then afraid to take a ride
And if it's a sin
No place on earth will I ever fit in
And I don't mind
Someday I pray I just may
As I make my way
Well I might have been helpful
Or a mischievous bastard
But when I'm thinking about it
I do what I can
In the infinite halfway
Where everyone always meets me
And by the laws of pure error
Do we exchange and understand
I'm yelling as loudly
As my lungs will allow
I wish I could whisper
Can you hear me now
And if it's a sin
No place on earth will I ever fit in
And I don't mind
Someday I pray I just may
As I make my way
Could be no one has the meaning
Of what anybody says
But so we don't feel so lonely
We decide that we do
Well now we might be speaking English
But what does that mean
And can you honestly tell me
What color is blue
Well you could try an explanation
Or try to wonder why
But if I'm lost in your driveway
All I really can do is try
And if it's a sin
No place on earth will I ever fit in
And I don't mind
I've looked and searched her over countless times
And I'll do it again
Someday I may finally want to stay
Someday I pray I just may
As I make my way
As I make my way
As I make my way...
The lyrics of "Make My Way" by Blues Traveler is a contemplation of the complexities of human communication and the struggle to find one's place in the world. The song presents two contrasting experiences with asking for directions, one where asking for directions is met with unreliable answers that may lead one astray, and another where communication leads to understanding and exchange. The lyrics suggest that while communication may be fraught with confusion and misunderstandings, it is still necessary for human connection.
The lyrics also reflect on the struggle to fit in and find meaning in life. The lines, "if it's a sin, no place on earth will I ever fit in," speak to the feeling of being an outsider and not belonging anywhere. The lyrics suggest that perhaps finding one's place in the world is less important than the journey of self-discovery.
The line, "I wish I could whisper, can you hear me now," is a poignant reflection on the human desire to be heard and understood. It suggests that even when communication fails, the desire for connection remains.
Overall, "Make My Way" is a thoughtful reflection on the complexities of human communication and the struggle to find one's place in the world.

When you roll down your window
When you stop and ask for directions
And ask for directions
And ask someone which way to go
Can you count on the answers
Can you trust that the answer is correct
That you would receive
That you will get the right information
If you've ever been taken
If you've ever been misled
By that passed along pay back
By something someone else told you to get back at you
Why ask in the first place you might not believe
Why bother asking if you might not trust the answer
But I won't be confined to road maps
But I won't limit myself to following directions
Or let assholes decide
Or let unpleasant people tell me what to do
And I'd rather be lost
And I prefer being unsure of where I am
Then afraid to take a ride
Than too scared to go anywhere at all
And if it's a sin
And if this is wrong
No place on earth will I ever fit in
I don't belong anywhere
And I don't mind
But I'm okay with that
Someday I pray I just may
I hope one day I'll find where I belong
As I make my way
As I journey through life
Well I might have been helpful
I might have tried to assist
Or a mischievous bastard
Or I might have been up to no good
But when I'm thinking about it
But when I reflect on it
I do what I can
I do my best with what I have
In the infinite halfway
In the middle ground where we all meet
Where everyone always meets me
Where I always seem to find myself
And by the laws of pure error
And through the inevitable mistakes we make
Do we exchange and understand
Do we share and comprehend with each other
I'm yelling as loudly
I'm shouting as loud as I can
As my lungs will allow
With all the strength of my breath
I wish I could whisper
I wish I could speak softly
Can you hear me now
Can you hear what I'm saying
Could be no one has the meaning
Maybe no one really knows the meaning
Of what anybody says
Of what anyone is expressing
But so we don't feel so lonely
But so we won't feel so alone
We decide that we do
We choose to believe we understand
Well now we might be speaking English
Even though we're using the same language
But what does that mean
But what does it really signify
And can you honestly tell me
And can you truly explain to me
What color is blue
What is something that seems so obvious, but is actually difficult to describe
Well you could try an explanation
You could attempt to define it
Or try to wonder why
Or try to understand why it's so difficult
But if I'm lost in your driveway
But if I'm still unsure even when I'm right in front of you
All I really can do is try
All I can do is my best
I've looked and searched her over countless times
I've examined and explored this world an endless number of times
And I'll do it again
And I'll keep doing it in the future
Someday I may finally want to stay
One day I might find a place where I finally feel like I belong
Someday I pray I just may
I hope someday I will
As I make my way
As I continue journeying through my life
As I make my way
As I navigate my path
As I make my way...
As I move forward on my journey
