Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. Its single "Song 2" brought the band mainstream success in the US for the first time. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued their experimentation with electronic sounds and was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, featuring more minimal guitar work. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank, and Blur disbanded for several years after the end of the album's associated tour, with the members engaged in other projects.
In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon back in the band and embarked on a European reunion tour. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations and toured internationally. In 2012, they received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive Blur studio album to top the British chart. The group have largely been on hiatus since the Magic Whip tour, but have announced plans to reunite in 2023 for various live dates.

What you've done
She's a gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum
Get nothing done
You beetlebum
Just get numb
Beetlebum
And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on then all my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong
I just slip away and I am gone
Nothing is wrong
She turns me on
I just slip away and I am gone
Beetlebum
Because you're young
She's a gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum
She'll suck your thumb
She'll make you come
'Cause, she's your gun
Now what you've done
Beetlebum
And when she lets me slip away
She turns me on then all my violence is gone
Nothing is wrong
I just slip away and I am gone
There's nothing wrong
She turns me on
I just slip away and I am gone
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
He's on, he's on, he's on it
The lyrics in Beetlebum by Blur seem to be about a relationship that has become toxic and addictive, with the use of "gun" and "numb" implying danger and lack of feeling at the same time. The line "When she lets me slip away, she turns me on and all my violence is gone" suggests that the singer is using this relationship to escape from their darker thoughts and tendencies. The use of the word "Beetlebum" itself is unclear in meaning, but it adds an element of surrealism to the lyrics that reflects the instability and confusion within the relationship.
The lyrics also touch on the concept of youth and how it can be a powerful force, but also one that can lead to dangerous situations. The line "Because you're young, she's a gun" implies that both the singer and their partner are reckless and inexperienced, and this is what draws them together. However, the consequences of their actions are also emphasized through the use of words like "come" and "gone", suggesting that this relationship is taking a toll on their emotional well-being and possibly their physical safety as well.
Overall, Beetlebum is a complex and ambiguous song with lyrics that can be interpreted in various ways. It touches on themes of addiction, escape, and youth, using surreal imagery and clever wordplay to deliver its message.
