Best Days
Blur Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bow bells say goodbye to the last train
Over the river they all go again
Out into leafy nowhere hope someone
Waiting out there for them
Cabbie has his mind on a fare to the sun
He works nights but it's not much fun
Picks up the London yo-yo's, all on their own down Soho
Please take me home

Other people wouldn't want to hear you
If you said that these are the best days of their lives
Other people would turn around an d laugh at you
If you said that these were the best days of our lives

Trellick Tower's been calling
I know she'll leave me in the morning

In hotel cells listening to dial tones
Remote controls and cable moans
In his drink he's been talking
Gets disconnected sleepwalking back home

Other people wouldn't like to hear you
If you said that these are the best days of our lives
Other people'd turn around and laugh at you
If you said that these are the best days of our lives
Everyone'd break into a cold sweat
If you said that these are the best days of their lives
And other people'd turn around and laugh at you

If you said that these are the best days of our lives
Of our lives

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Best Days by Blur have a melancholic tone, depicting the mundanity of life in the city. The opening lyrics, "Bow bells say goodbye to the last train, over the river they all go again" alludes to the departure of people, perhaps going home after a long day at work. The following line, "Out into leafy nowhere hope someone waiting out there for them," suggests that despite going home, people feel isolated and alone. The cabbie's character is introduced, who has to work nights and picks up the "London yo-yos, all on their own down Soho." The chorus repeats several times, and it talks about how others won't agree that these are the best days of their lives.

The second verse focuses on different characters - one living in Trellick Tower - with the line "I know she'll leave me in the morning" signifying a transient and lonely existence. The hotel cell part is about the singer being in a foreign city on a business trip, listening to dial tones and cable moans. The last line, "If you said that these are the best days of our lives," is repeated several times, becoming more desperate each time. Overall, the song highlights the feeling of being disconnected in the city, and how the daily grind can be draining without something to look forward to.

@popsc3ne

one of my favourite blur songs, itโ€™s nowhere near talked about enough

@chimpspanker

Agreed.

@heybonbon8884

I 100% agree. The lyrics are beautiful

@ConsumerkingUk

my thoughts entirely

@leob4403

Blur has the highest amount of overlooked songs in music history probably. There are atleast 50 bangers that are completely forgotten about, where if another band would have written one of these songs it would have been their biggest hit song

@rustyfynn

Agreed. Such a well crafted piece of songwriting.

@eugeneaxe

Great Escape is their best album in my view.
