Moving On
Blur Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At the music heist
I met the gourmet man
With aluminum lungs
Sucks all we can

Seek the whole world go flip
In a stunt bug style
With a cellulite pile
But he can smile

This is the music
And we're movin' on, movin' on

We're sticky eyes and sticky bones
You get no time on your own
You get a dose and get a ghost
You get it coast to coast
Dye your hair black
Get Satan tattooed on your back
Pierce yourself with a coke can
Put yourself in fake tan now you're in a band

Cause this is the music
And we're movin' on, movin' on
Hey, this is the music
And we're movin' on, movin' on
No matter how low, there's always further to go
We're movin' on, movin' on

We're movin' on, it won't be long
We're movin' on, it won't be long

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Blur's "Movin' On" paint a picture of a wild and chaotic music scene, with references to bizarre fashion choices, substance abuse, and a quest for fame. The opening lines describe a meeting with the "gourmet man," who has "aluminum lungs" and "sucks all we can." These lines hint at the idea of excess and indulgence, with the gourmet man consuming everything in sight. The next lines paint a picture of a "stunt bug" style, with "cellulite piles" and a smile that belies the chaos.

The chorus, "This is the music / And we're movin' on, movin' on," speaks to a desire to keep pushing forward, even when things are clearly not ideal. The verses that follow describe a world where there is no time for oneself and where drugs and questionable fashion choices are the norm. The image of dying one's hair black and tattooing Satan onto one's back suggests a desire to stand out and rebel against societal norms. The lines "Put yourself in fake tan now you're in a band" suggest that even the most absurd choices can lead to success in the music industry.

Overall, "Movin' On" is a commentary on the wild and crazy nature of the music industry, with nods to excess and desperation to stand out. The song suggests that success comes to those who are willing to take risks, even if those risks are absurd or dangerous.

What a perfect last song before the last song

@k-leb4671

I like how Strange News from Another Star seems like it would be the final song of the album, but then it strangely transitions into this hard-rocking piece. And the album doesn't even end there. Next is a 6-minute epic rock-dub-whatever song. And even after that, there's still an instrumental bonus song that plays afterwards. Finally, the album is finished.

Except on the American version, which has yet another full-blown song, between Essex Dogs and the hidden interlude. Geez...

@garthjohnson88

@@k-leb4671 That instrumental bonus... oh goodness I remember it now, harp like and mystical. I wanna find it now. What it was like to own CDs!

@zoomgallygally

PERFECT PENULTIMATE SONG :)

@largeslappy

@@k-leb4671 Yeah, but said extra full-blown song is Dancehall, which is fucking awesome.
