Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. Its single "Song 2" brought the band mainstream success in the US for the first time. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued their experimentation with electronic sounds and was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, featuring more minimal guitar work. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank, and Blur disbanded for several years after the end of the album's associated tour, with the members engaged in other projects.
In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon back in the band and embarked on a European reunion tour. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations and toured internationally. In 2012, they received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive Blur studio album to top the British chart. The group have largely been on hiatus since the Magic Whip tour, but have announced plans to reunite in 2023 for various live dates.

The sound of magic music in his ears
Videoed by a bus load of tourists
Shinny shell suits and drinking lemonade
Now I got a funny feeling
Which I bought mail order
From a man in a teepee in California
Said he once was a great game show performer
Blew it all away
So take me home
Don't leave alone
I'm not that good
But I'm not that bad
No psycho killer
Hooligan gorilla
I dream to riot
Oh you should try it
I'll eat parole get gold card soul
My joy of life is on a roll
And we'll all be the same in the end
Then you're on your own
Well we go happy day glow in the discos
The sound of magic music in our brains
Someone stumbles to the bathroom
with the horrors
Says lord give me time for I've jumped into space
I'm in outer space
So take me home
Don't leave alone
I'm not that good
But I'm not that bad
No psycho killer
Hooligan gorilla
I dream to riot
Oh you should try it
I'll eat parole get gold card soul
My joy of life is on a roll
And we'll all be the same in the end
The lyrics to Blur's song On Your Own recount the experiences of individuals on a spiritual journey, intersecting with the mundane and hedonistic impulses of modern life. The song meditates on the fleeting nature of happiness and the search for fulfillment in a world that is ever-changing. The opening verse references a holy man crossing the Ganges river, soundtracked by magical music, while being captured by a group of tourists dressed in shiny, mismatched outfits. This seemingly idyllic scene is undercut by the singer's admission of a funny feeling, one that was bought mail-order from a man living in a teepee in California who claims to have been a former game-show performer who lost all his fortune. The chorus of the song continues the reflective tone, with the singer asking to be taken home and declaring that he is not a psycho killer or a hooligan gorilla, but rather someone who dreams of rioting and living life to its fullest. The song ends with the admission, "Then you're on your own," as if to acknowledge that ultimately, despite our shared experiences, we are all alone in our journey toward self-discovery.
Overall, the song's lyrics meditate on the fleeting nature of happiness and the search for fulfillment in a world that can be shallow and materialistic. It juxtaposes the lofty aspirations of spiritual seeking with the hedonistic impulses of modern society, ultimately leading the singer to realize that he is not so different from those around him. The chorus's push and pull ("I'm not that good/But I'm not that bad") reflects the singer's struggle to reconcile his lofty aspirations with his own shortcomings.
