Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. Its single "Song 2" brought the band mainstream success in the US for the first time. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued their experimentation with electronic sounds and was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, featuring more minimal guitar work. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank, and Blur disbanded for several years after the end of the album's associated tour, with the members engaged in other projects.
In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon back in the band and embarked on a European reunion tour. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations and toured internationally. In 2012, they received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive Blur studio album to top the British chart. The group have largely been on hiatus since the Magic Whip tour, but have announced plans to reunite in 2023 for various live dates.

Is nothing in particular now
And imitation comes naturally
But I never really stopped to think how
And everyone is a clever clone
A chrome coloured clone am I
So in the abscence of a way of life
Just repeat this again and again and again
Hey, hey come out tonight
Popscene, all right
I'm leaving town to run away
Right into your twisted arms
No queues and there's no panic there
Just dangling your feet in the grass
My lack of natural luster now
Seems to be losing me friends
So in the absence of a way of life
I'll repeat this again and again, and again
Hey, hey come out tonight
Hey, hey come out tonight
Popscene
Hey, hey come out tonight
Hey, hey come out tonight
Popscene, all right
Hey, hey come out tonight
Hey, hey come out tonight
Popscene
The lyrics to Blur’s “Popscene” explore the theme of conformity among society and the desire to break away from the norms of that society. The first verse introduces the idea of imitation and how it comes naturally to everyone. The use of the phrase “clever clone” suggests that although individuals may think that they are unique, they are all just copies of each other. The singer also identifies themselves as a “chrome coloured clone”, implying that they have lost their individuality and have become a part of the mass crowd. The line “So in the absence of a way of life, just repeat this again and again and again” is repeated, highlighting the monotony of life without any true purpose or meaning. The chorus then invites the listener to “come out tonight” and join the “Popscene” which can be interpreted as being a subculture that exists outside societal norms.
The second verse focuses on the singer’s search for something different in their life. They express their desire to leave town and escape to someone’s “twisted arms”. The line “No queues and there’s no panic there, just dangling your feet in the grass” alludes to the freedom and carefree aspect of their desired lifestyle. However, the singer is also aware that their lack of individuality has caused them to lose friends. So, once again, they repeat the idea of the “Popscene” as an alternative that could give them the sense of belonging and identity they crave.
Overall, “Popscene” can be interpreted as a critique of conformity and the lack of individuality in society. The constant repeating of the same line emphasizes how life can become monotonous and without meaning when individuals are just clones of each other. However, the chorus invites the listener to join a subculture and break away from the norms, suggesting that there is still hope for individuals to find purpose and identity in their lives.

A fervoured image of another world
My idealized vision of a different world is just a fleeting thought
Is nothing in particular now
That vision is now nothing special or unique
And imitation comes naturally
Copying others is instinctual
But I never really stopped to think how
I never considered the implications of blindly imitating others
And everyone is a clever clone
Everyone is a smart imitator just like me
A chrome coloured clone am I
I am a silver-colored copy of others, lacking originality
So in the absence of a way of life
Without a clear idea of how to live
Just repeat this again and again and again
I keep doing the same things without actually living
Hey, hey come out tonight
Let's party tonight
Popscene, all right
It's time for the pop music culture to shine
I'm leaving town to run away
I'm trying to escape my mundane life
Right into your twisted arms
I'm seeking refuge in a dysfunctional relationship
No queues and there's no panic there
There's no chaos or stress in this situation
Just dangling your feet in the grass
Just relax and enjoy the simple things in life
My lack of natural luster now
My lack of personality is causing me to lose friends
Seems to be losing me friends
People are moving on because I lack uniqueness
I'll repeat this again and again, and again
I keep doing the same thing over and over
