Blur's self-titled fifth album (1997) saw another stylistic shift, influenced by the lo-fi styles of American indie rock groups, and became their third UK chart-topping album. Its single "Song 2" brought the band mainstream success in the US for the first time. Their next album, 13 (1999) saw the band experimenting with electronic and gospel music, and featured more personal lyrics from Albarn. Their seventh album, Think Tank (2003), continued their experimentation with electronic sounds and was also shaped by Albarn's growing interest in hip hop and world music, featuring more minimal guitar work. Coxon left the band during early recording sessions for Think Tank, and Blur disbanded for several years after the end of the album's associated tour, with the members engaged in other projects.
In 2009, Blur reunited with Coxon back in the band and embarked on a European reunion tour. In the following years, they released several singles and compilations and toured internationally. In 2012, they received a Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Their eighth album, The Magic Whip (2015), was the sixth consecutive Blur studio album to top the British chart. The group have largely been on hiatus since the Magic Whip tour, but have announced plans to reunite in 2023 for various live dates.

Wake up
Wake up with purpose and polite efficiency
Stuff vitamin pills down your half guarantee
A kiss and cuddle with a lucky girl
You get fed and watered
Makes your hair curl
And when the day draws in
You put on a record
Put on something gentle
And wait for the cows to come home
Wake up a little voice says
Do you eagerly
You mustn't let yourself sink financally
Don't listen to the accusation that you're tight
You could be the first man on your street to get it right
And when the day draws in
You going to go into waltz time
For once it was good time
Wait for the cows to come home
Ha da de da da
Ha da de da da
Ha da de da da
Ha da de da da da
Wake up in porpuse and polite efficiency
So you get fed and watered with good company
And when the day draws in
You go into waltz time
Wait for the cows to come home
All your life
The song "When the Cows Come Home" by Blur talks about the daily routine of a person who wakes up with a purpose and polite efficiency. The person starts the day by taking vitamin pills, followed by a kiss and a cuddle with a lucky girl. The line "Makes your hair curl" suggests that the person is content and happy with his life. The song encourages the person to be financially responsible and not let any accusations of being tight affect him. He is asked to strive to be the first man on his street to get it right.
As the day draws to a close, the person puts on a gentle record and waits for the cows to come home. The phrase "when the cows come home" is an idiom that refers to an event that is unlikely to happen or will take too long to occur. This line can imply that the person is waiting for something that might never happen, or he is just idly waiting for something to change. As the day ends, the song suggests that the person goes into waltz time, which is a dance style known for its romantic and soft movements.
The song's theme revolves around the mundanity of life but also encourages its listeners to appreciate the simplicity and stability of day-to-day routine. The repetitive nature of the words "Wake up," emphasize the struggle to get out of bed and start the day. The song also highlights the importance of financial responsibility and being content with one's life while waiting for change.
