Running up That Hill
Bo Bruce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It doesn't hurt me, do you want to feel how I feel
You want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me
Do you want to hear about the deal I'm making
You, it's you and me

And if I only could I'd make a deal with God
I'd get Him to swap our places
Be running up that road, be running up that hill
Be running up that building if I only could, oh

Don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
There is thunder in our hearts

Is there so much hate for the ones we love
Tell me we both matter, don't we
You, it's you and me
It's you and me who won't be unhappy

And if I only could I'd make a deal with God
I'd get Him to swap our places
Be running up that road, be running up that hill
Be running up that building, if I only could, oh

Come on, baby, come on, darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
Oh, Come on, angel, come on, come on, darling
Let's exchange the experience, oh

And if I only could I'd make a deal with God
I'd get Him to swap our places
Be running up that road, be running up that hill
With no problems

And if I only could I'd make a deal with God
I'd get Him to swap our places
Be running up that road, be running up that hill
With no problems

And if I only could I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get Him to swap our places
Be running up that road, be running up that hill
With no problems

Be running up that road,
Be running up that hill, with no problem

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Running Up That Hill" by Bo Bruce speak of a desire to swap places with someone else in life. The song starts with the singer asking the other person if they want to feel what she is feeling, suggesting that the person may not understand what she is going through. She then speaks of a deal she is making, but doesn't provide any details.

The chorus reveals what the deal is: she wishes to swap places with God. She thinks that if she could only make a deal with God, she would be able to run up a hill, building, or road with no problems. The phrase "running up that hill" is significant, as it suggests the difficulty of the task she is asking for.

The second verse talks about the hurt that the singer and the other person are feeling. They both want to be happy but are tearing each other apart. She questions why there is so much hate for the ones we love and asks if they both matter. The final part of the lyrics speaks to the desire to share an experience with someone and make a deal with God to be able to run up that hill without any problems.

Overall, "Running Up That Hill" is a song about the desire to swap places in life and make a deal with God to achieve something that seems impossible. It speaks to the difficulty of relationships and the desire for happiness.

Yes. Bo's performance has really stuck with me as one of the highlights from ANY of these "search for a star" type shows.
I think it was Kate Bush's comment that made the greatest impact. It's always good when the original artist appreciates your interpretation of their song and Kate was very gracious with her praise of Bo.
