You Don't Love Me
Bo Diddley Muddy Waters & Little Walter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ride on Josephine, ride on

Ride on Josephine, ride on

Ride on Josephine,

You know you gotta runnin' machine

Baby, baby ride on, Josephine

Baby ride on

Well, Josephine drivin' in a hopped up Ford

Twin carburetors gonna burn up the road

Twin exhaust stickin' out of the rear

Something that'll really take her away from here

Ride on Josephine, ride on

Ride on Josephine, ride on

Ride on, Josephine,

girl you gotta runnin' machine

Ride on, Josephine, baby ride on

Josephine's engine, said it started runnin' hot

Tried to trade it in at a used car lot

The man couldn't believe his natural eyes

When she pulled it up into his drive

Ride on, Josephine, ride on

Woo, ride on, Josephine, ride on

Yeah, ride on, Josephine,

You know you gotta runnin' machine

Ride on, Josephine, baby ride on

Josephine

Your tank is leakin' baby

I think you better slow down and ride with me

You say what?

You tell me to hush up and mind my own business

Baby, you are my business

You good business, baby

I just love good business

And there's plenty of good business

in Atlanta tonight!

You say what?

You ask me what kind of car am I drivin', baby

I tell ya

I gotta '68 Cadillac with Thunderbird wings

I'm tellin' ya, baby, it's a bad ole thing

I can burn rubber in each and every gear

I think I can rock 'n' roll right out of here

Ride on, Josephine, ride on

Woo, ride on Josephine, ride on

Ride on, Josephine,

you know you gotta runnin' machine

Ride on, Josephine, baby ride on

Overall Meaning

In Bo Diddley's song "You Don't Love Me," Josephine is the subject of the lyrics, and she's driving a fast car. The repetition of "ride on Josephine, ride on" in the chorus highlights her need for speed and her desire to get away from her current situation. She's driving a hopped-up Ford with twin carburetors and exhaust so she can outrun anyone who tries to catch her.

However, her car starts to overheat, and she tries to trade it in at a used car lot. The man who inspects the car can't believe his eyes when he sees what Josephine is driving. Despite the car's issues, Josephine refuses to slow down and instead tells the singer to mind his own business.

The lyrics of the song suggest that Josephine is a rebellious woman who doesn't want to adhere to anyone's expectations or rules. She wants to live life on her own terms, and her car represents her independence and freedom. The song is a celebration of people who reject conformity and embrace their individuality.

This is so good!

@Brian31881

Bo to Walter "I want to save your song." Three guys from the Delta, give them a little whiskey and a hot band and start recording. This album was FUN. Chess tried again later in the year, but the tension between Muddy and the Wolf meant that the "Super, Super Blues Album" was not fun.

@Brian31881

@@aqua5680 So sad that Walter would be killed 8 months later.

@danieldugan886

Brian,'would have been the brawl to end it all.' NG.
