Gun Slinger
Bo Diddley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can tell because it's plain to see

I can tell the way you look at me

The way you know, you hold my hand

Yes, pretty baby I can understand
I can tell, I can tell

I know you don't love me no more

No more, no more

No more, a-no more

I can tell, I can tell

I know you don't love me no more

I asked your mama and your papa, too

What more can a poor man do?

Now, you been runnin' with a heart-breaker child, around

Yes, a new boy's why you put me down

I can tell, I can tell

I know you don't love me no more

(Instrumental)

Well, you won't answer your telephone

When I knock on your door

They say that you ain't home

Your sister let me in

And tell me I can wait

When you come home

You show up real late

Now, I can tell

Oh, I can tell

I know you don't love me no more

No more

I said, no more

No more

No more

Baby, I can give you romance

Only if you give me another chance

I'll cook your food and wash your clothes

I promise I'll keep your warm when it get cold

I can tell

I can tell

I know you don't love me no more

No more

FADES-

No more

A-no more.

Overall Meaning

The song Gun Slinger by Bo Diddley is about the legendary persona that he has crafted for himself as a gunslinger. He is portrayed as fearless and confident, a man who doesn't take any mess from anyone. The way he is described, he is almost like a mythical figure from the Wild West, taking on anyone and anything that comes his way.

The lyrics themselves are pretty straightforward, with Bo Diddley talking about his reputation as a gunslinger, and how even the sheriff is scared of him when he comes to town. But the way he delivers the lyrics, with his signature rhythm and blues sound, adds to the overall sense of swagger and bravado that is present in the song. The repeated refrain of "Bo Diddley's a gunslinger" drives home the point that he is not to be messed with.

Overall, Gun Slinger is a classic example of Bo Diddley's unique style, combining blues, rock, and country into one unforgettable sound. The song paints a vivid picture of a larger-than-life character, embodying all the steely-eyed determination and grit of a true gunslinger.

A box guitar in hand, sounding good, looking real, an old school rocker. 2 KOOL..my times. Greatness in a cowboy hat!!!

@alangray9117

I saw him Halloween night at Roadhouse Ruby's in Olathe Kansas. His first song was I'm a Rock and Roll Vampire which lasted 30 minutes. I was happy to see this legend and one of the founding fathers of rock n roll.

Coolest man who ever lived: Bo Diddley.

@jamesleser9968

I was 12 when I heard this song in a listening booth with phones on and saw his red guitar, I was hooked! This was my first album and Bo's been a favorite of mine since. Great quality and haven't heard it in a long time. Thanks

So GREAT to see all the replies and memories about Bo....as a documentary about the early rockers ( Jerry Lee, Chuck, and Lil Richard) quoted: "they were singers out in the jungle and the alleys". And their sound was unadulterated by any effects ( fuzz tone, etc.) Later on I would discover Bo's original hit "Bo Diddley" and being a drummer, I later snuck it into a Christian rock song. In HS a band I played in did one of his landmark instrumentals, "Bo's Beat" and we re-created the opening effect by me playing on the lead guitar's neck with my sticks. Finally, I saw Bo playing at Milwaukee's SummerFest in the 80's and he had thousands dancing to his churning guitar music. I thought they did him an injustice in "Cadillac Records" by not including him.

Yo, twodawgs...this is one of the baddest songs ever made. Thanks, god bless.

He is soooooo underrated . The man is a colossus!

@mychtwo4307

I remember listening to this with my dad in his old Ecololine van when we on the road. He turned me onto a lot of the old blues masters, jazz and some genuine folk music.
I turned him onto Jimi Hendrix years later, add he dug it.

I think only twice in my life; after hours of standing in front of an amp with closest shape tremelo wave shape to early Bo's (which I got by building a clone of the actual effect) and imitating his playing style...only twice have the stars aligned to give me the Diddley Beat for about ten glorious seconds... awesome Twodawgzz
