I Love You So
Bo Diddley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want you to be no slave
I don't want you to work all day
I don't want you to be true
I just want to make love to you

I don't want you to wash my clothes
I don't want you to keep my home
I don't want your money too
I just want to make love to you

Well I can see by the way that you switch and walk
And I can tell by the way that you baby talk
And I know by the way that you treat your man
I want to love you baby, it's a cryin' shame

I don't want you to bake my bread
I don't want you to make my bed

I don't want you cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you

Overall Meaning

" I Love You So" is a classic blues love song written by Bo Diddley in 1961. The song expresses his sincere love and affection for a woman, who he has been in love with for all his life. The opening lines of the song, "Oh, I, I, I, baby, I love you so, You know, you know, I love you so" establish the theme of the song and convey the intensity of the singer's emotions. The simple repetition of the opening lines reinforces the depth of his feelings.

The song also has an element of self-doubt and vulnerability when the singer wonders what the woman will do, given their long-standing love. The lyrics "Sometimes I wonder, baby, what you're gonna do. You told me honey, that our love's unreal, I can't be with you 'cause you won't be filled" indicate that there may be external forces or societal expectations that are preventing them from being together. The way these lines are delivered gives a sense of resignation to the situation, making it all the more poignant.

Towards the end of the song, the singer decides to embrace his love and be content with what he has, singing "In the morning, it's alright, In the evening, it's still alright, In the night, it's alright, Where you be, it's still alright." The repeated "alright" affirm that his love is enough, and that he will continue loving her unreservedly.

my favorite of his...first time I heard this it was played on one of those R&B shows on public radio 25 years ago hosted by Ruth Brown.  I dozed off with my headphones on.  That opening riff sure woke me up!  Then I hear this force of nature come through the cans while thinking "why had I never heard this song before...it's amazing!"  Sure, there's his other big songs, but this one was a real sleeper that should have been played more.
