Mr Khrushchev
Bo Diddley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I think I want to go to the army (Hut 2, 3, 4)
I think I want to go overseas (Hut 2, 3, 4)
I want to see Khrushchev (Hut 2, 3, 4)
I want to see him all by myself (Hut 2, 3, 4)

Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)

He don't believe that water's wet
If he did he could've stopped those tests (Hut 2, 3, 4)
JFK can't do it by his self (Hut 2, 3, 4)
C'mon fellas, let's give him a little help (Hut 2, 3, 4)

We as Americans to understand (Hut 2, 3, 4)
We got to unite and protect our land
We got to keep us on alert (Hut 2, 3, 4)
To keep our families from getting hurt

Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)
Hey, Khrushchev (Hey, Khrushchev)

We fightin' over a six-wheel bus
My bald-headed crew just parked on up

We as Americans to understand (Hut 2, 3, 4)
We got to unite and protect our land
We got to keep us on alert (Hut 2, 3, 4)
To keep our families from getting hurt

Hut, 2, 3, 4, yeah! (Drill chatter) Get in line there

Lord have mercy! Get inline and walk right
Your mom can't help you now! Ain't nothing like home!.

Overall Meaning

The song "Mr Khrushchev" by Bo Diddley is a commentary on the Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1960s. In the verses, the singer expresses a desire to join the army, go overseas, and see Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in person. The chorus repeatedly addresses Khrushchev, as if directly speaking to him. However, the tone of the song is not particularly respectful towards the Soviet leader; the lyrics suggest that Khrushchev is skeptical about basic scientific facts, and that President John F. Kennedy needs help from the American people to stand up to him.

The song ultimately advocates for American unity and vigilance in the face of perceived threats from outside the country. The verses reinforce the idea that Americans must be willing to defend their country and families from harm, while the drill sergeant-style interjections remind listeners of the military discipline and training required to do so. The overall effect is a call to arms for Americans to stand ready and protect their way of life.

Circa l965 U S Army Fort Jackson Basic Training. Marching and marching they needed a drum beat to march to. I gave them the Bo Diddley beat to march to on drums. Every One dug the Bo Diddley Beat. To this date its a catchy rhythm. Bo knew what he was doing all the time. He was loved and admired by many. Bo Diddley the Legend.

Khruschev never wanted the apocalypse - all this fuss in Cuba was because there were 'merican nukes in Turkey beforehand.
