All night and the night befo'
(Don't let it go)
Somebody kept a-knockin' on the do'
(Don't let it go)
Got up and see what the noise
(Don't let it go)
Spot myself a rowdy young boy
(Don't let it go)

Put on my hat, put on my shoes
(Don't let it go)
I ran out the do' to see what I could do
(Don't let it go)
They were singin' a song called
(Boo-hoo-hoo)

Look out here come the rhythm boys
(Boo-hoo-hoo)
I was out there shakin' their hands
(Boo-hoo-hoo)
One cat broke out singin', "I'm A Man"
(Boo-hoo-hoo)
Hold on to what you got but don't let go
(Don't let it go)

Hold on to what you got but don't let go (yeah, yeah)
(Don't let it go)
Hold on to what you got but don't let go
(Oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh)
(Don't let it go)

Hold on to what you got but don't let go
(Don't let it go)
We've changed the tune and start singin' a song
(Don't let it go)
(Boo-hoo-hoo)
I like yo' woman ain't gon' do no harm
(Boo-hoo-hoo)

(Don't let it go)
Hold on to what you got but don't let go
Oh-oh-oh-oh)
(Don't let it go)
Hold on to what you got but don't let go
(Don't let it go)
Oh-oh-oh-oh)
Hold on to what you got but don't let go
(Don't let it go)

Goin' start to singin', you're singin' in vain
(Don't let it go)
I like a-yo woman, it's a cryin' shame
(Don't let it go)
I said, 'No, no, no, that won't work, here'
(Don't let it go)
You better go back, grow up, come back next year
(Don't let it go)

She said, 'Hold on to what you got but don't let it go'

(Hey, don't let it go)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bo Diddley's song "What's Buggin' You" narrate a scene where the singer is woken up in the middle of the night by a knock on the door. He steps out to investigate and finds a group of young boys who break out into a song called "Boo-hoo-hoo" but eventually change the tune. One of them starts singing "I'm A Man," and they engage in a friendly exchange, with the singer warning a beer boy to "go back, grow up, come back next year." Through it all, the song emphasizes the need to hold onto what you have, although it doesn't specify what that might be.

On one level, the song could be interpreted as a simple story, a whimsical account of a late-night encounter with some youths. However, the lyrics' repetition of the phrase, "Hold on to what you got but don't let go," underscores an overarching theme of maintaining stability and not giving up what one has. Additionally, the fact that the song evolves from "Boo-hoo-hoo" to "I'm A Man" could be seen as a comment on the passage of time, as the boys grow and mature, or as a representation of the singer and his own evolution.

For many year's I never knew Bo wrote this... One of my Favorite STONE'S song's... Bo's guitar on here is fascinating... I've stuck it on SAVE. Anyone not heard "Crackin' Up" by the Stone's, take a listen. Mick excell's with his vocal's.... It's very different to this version. Bo also does a faster version, which is good too.

@canislupis3129

How I would love to see the Stones bring this into their upcoming tour in 2024. We have pit tickets to several of the shows and we have been going pretty faithfully for 25 years now. This would be an exciting song to do.
