Whitewater
Boards of Canada Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The neighbours are brilliant, and I feel proud, and you ought to be proud of me too.
I really wonder why people don't treat me gently. I do a job, a real good job - I clean my room, or something like that - and I feel proud, and you ought to be proud of me too.
And the neighbours are brilliant, and we were having a good time, and I'd be happy. Then when the time comes to go home, I feel rather sad, and I turn into the sad me.
Anyway, there sure are a lot of different me's, just like you have a lot of different you's.
Well, I'm going outside now, outside right now, to call all the neighbours, and that's fine too...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Boards of Canada's song "Whitewater" are intriguing and thought-provoking. The singer seems to be reflecting on their own worth and the way they are perceived by others. The opening line suggests that the singer's neighbors are impressive in some way, and they themselves feel pride in their own accomplishments. However, the second line reveals a sense of confusion and hurt: for some reason, people are not treating them gently, despite their best efforts to be a good neighbor and a responsible member of the community.

The third and fourth lines suggest that the singer is striving for validation from someone specific, perhaps a lover, friend, or family member. They have done something impressive, perhaps cleaned their room or completed some task, and they feel that this should earn them praise or recognition from others. The repetition of the line "and you ought to be proud of me too" emphasizes the singer's desire to be seen and appreciated by others.

The final few lines of the verse are somewhat enigmatic, as the singer reflects on the many different versions of themselves that exist. The idea that there are multiple "me's" and "you's" implies a kind of multiplicity of identity: we are not just one fixed self, but rather a complex and ever-shifting collection of selves. The verse ends with a declaration that the singer is going outside to call all the neighbors, which could either be seen as a lighthearted gesture of community-building or a somewhat desperate attempt to connect with others.

Overall, "Whitewater" is a haunting and introspective song that raises interesting questions about the self, identity, and social validation.

They hit you in a place you only expect religion or a really deep book/movie)loved one to hit you. It's always hard to explain to people who just aren't into them as you are, but luckily we live in the internet age where like minded people are around.
