Far Away
Bob Catley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Staring at a midnight sun
Torn across a violet seam now
Bleeding inner light across the sea
Standing on the cliffs, I come
Restless is the soul in me now
Breakers on the rocks, they roar to me
A symphony
Far away
From the horizon, sky and sea
Born to wait for eternity
Far away
Knowing my life is incomplete
Till the day my dream will belong to me

As the sound of distant drums
Echo on a silent breeze now
Tendrils of night resound in me
How the shadow's flight is done
Out across the twilight scene now
Heaven only knows who holds the key
But I believe, I believe now

Far away
Somewhere beyond this battlefield
I'm awake on the edge of sleep
Far away
Timelessly waiting, patiently
Till the day my dream will belong to me

Far away
From the horizon, sky and sea
Born to wait for eternity
Far away
Knowing my life is incomplete
Till the day my dream will belong to me

Far away
Somewhere beyond this battlefield
I'm awake on the edge of sleep
Far away
Timelessly waiting, patiently
Till the day my dream will belong to me

Far away
Trying so hard to remember
Love's embrace, will it ever be?
Far away
Rising like flames from the embers
Till the day my dream will belong to me

To never sleep
Oh, my soul leads me on
To never sleep

I believe now
Oh, my soul leads me on

Overall Meaning

Bob Catley's song "Far Away" is a powerful song about hope and perseverance. The lyrics start with the image of a "midnight sun" and "violet seam," which creates a sense of otherworldliness and ambiguity. This is all tied together with the metaphor of the "bleeding inner light" across the ocean - a hint toward the singer's inner conflict as he watches the breakers. The lyrics express the restlessness and struggle of the soul, searching for a place of belonging and completeness. It's clear that something is missing for the singer, and he finds himself caught in between worlds - a battlefield in his mind.

The chorus repeats the idea of being "far away" from the horizon and sea, emphasizing the space between the singer and his goal. He is "born to wait for eternity," and feels that his life is incomplete until he can attain his dreams - a powerful message of hope for anyone struggling to find their place in this world. He hears distant drums echoing "on a silent breeze" and wonders who holds the key to unlocking his dreams. Despite this uncertainty, he still believes that he can achieve what he desires.

The song continues to emphasize the idea of waiting and longing for something that is just out of reach. Love is mentioned as the singer tries to remember the feeling of "embrace" and questions if it will ever come again. Yet even as he faces these doubts, his soul leads him on and he has faith that his dreams will come true one day.

Overall, the lyrics of "Far Away" are beautifully written and express the bittersweet feelings of hope and uncertainty. The singer is a relatable figure to anyone who has faced feelings of restlessness and longing.

This was a great album.... like the two others that Gary Hughes composed for Bob Catley...  And this is one of the best songs. Gary Hughes was in great shape, and the special voice of Bob Catley is - in my humble opinion -  more moving than Gary's voice (which I like as well).

Old comment, but I agree. I like Ten and Gary's voice, but Bob is God tier. He takes Gary's songwriting to another level. He did a cover of Ten's After the Love Has Gone during some live show and he did a killer job.
