Both artists were bi-products of the 60s music scene, Dylan for his solo work and Harrison for his work with the Beatles. The session took place on May 1, 1970, and consisted of Dylan taking vocals and Harrison taking lead guitar. Unlike the Dylan/Cash sessions the year earlier, which involved the two artists each holding the spotlight for the same amount of time, this session saw Harrison playing the role of back-up musician. The two would work together a year later in 1971 when Harrison organized a benefit concert (probably the first of its kind) for the people of Bangladesh.

George was called out to be on stage and sing something for Carl. After the song instead of remaining with the on stage group he went and sat back down again. George Harrison, along with most really great musicians, was a humble man. Think of the the Traveling Wilburys, all of George's best mates, and they all had one thing in common, each of them was truly humble. George also reminded everyone why they were there "God bless Carl".

I love that George went by the name Carl Harrison in the very early days as a tribute to Carl Perkins and then had the chance to know him and sing at his funeral. Seems so fitting. And yes, it's perfect that George was identified as 'Carl Perkins' Friend.'

George died only three years later. Considering that he had lung cancer, he was probably pretty unwell even at this stage. What a class act to attend and perform at Carl's funeral.

He actually had just been through treatment for throat cancer. He told Stan later that he wasn't even sure any sound would come out—he had not been singing at all.

So hard to fathom that 1 of the last times George ever sang in public was about 7-8 blocks from where we lived in Jackson. Lambuth University Chapel, a Methodist College. He sounds great, considering that he had lost a dear Friend & 1 of, if not his greatest musical influence. I "think" that's Ashley Judd there too, along with Wynonna, her sister. Read his autobiography & he was close to Judd Family. Carl was a huge influence on The Beatles. They recorded more covers of his songs than ANYONE.

I respect George Harrison for saying "God Bless Carl" and then went down and sat in the audience again. He came there to pay his respects, nothing more. He was suffering from lung cancer and was in Los Angeles to try a new treatment at UCLA, yet he got up there and softly sang the song "True Love" for Carl. He would also be gone in just a few more years.

54 y/o George Harrison, of the Beatles, singing his last live performance on 1/23/1998 in a funeral in a Christian Methodist chapel with Ricky Scaggs in the background and the Judd sisters present singing at the Womack Chapel of the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus. George had played for Carl on 6/15/1992 in the UK prior at the 21st anniversary of the Hard Rock Cafe and now at his funeral. George had been diagnosed throat cancer in the summer of 1997 already. Harrison appearing older for age 54 ravaged by the illness. Harrison had felt a lump on his throat in July 1997 and had surgery to remove the lump in August 1997. Harrison had been in the US that January of 1998, to be at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and was told he was clear and given a clean bill of health by May 1998. On June 8, 1998, Harrison, Starr and McCartney (the Threetles) were attending Linda McCartney's Memorial at St Martins in the Field church in London. George was grateful to God for Carl's inspiration in his life saying, "God bless Carl!"

a few points about this video I found interesting First, Stevie Wonder was obviously the camera man video taping this. 2nd, when George finishes his song you could see Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley Cyrus dad) on stage aplauding. 3rd, George's last moment on front of an audience as a singer was on a church stage (very fitting his kind soul). 4th, Georges last song was in Tenessee, the same place one of his idols Elvis was from. 5th, George with his long hair looked similar to Jesus in Church. :_

He was a local hero and philanthropist, so makes sense to me. (Also I remember the funeral for a Cincinnati talk show host being run during his usual slot and again at night, so it was done at one point)

Jesus Christ created "true love." If George believed in Jesus when he was a boy? He is with Carl right now. For, we are saved by grace through believing (faith). It only takes the faith of a child to be saved. God is true love. Once we become saved he will never leave us nor forsake us. That's the beauty of God's justice. Saved by the perfection of the Cross that atoned for all our sins. George obviously will not be seeing rewards given for faithfulness to grow in grace and knowledge of God's Word. .. But, he will will be overjoyed just the same to find himself in heaven. Saved by grace. Not of works. Just believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.
