The Trial
Bob Ezrin/Roger Waters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Good morning, Worm, your honor
The Crown will plainly show
The prisoner who now stands before you
Was caught red-handed showing feelings

Showing feelings of an almost human nature
This will not do
Call the schoolmaster
I always said he'd come to no good

In the end, your Honor
If they'd let me have my way
I could have flayed him into shape
But my hands were tied

The bleeding hearts and artists
Let him get away with murder
Let me hammer him today
Crazy

Toys in the attic, I am crazy
Truly gone fishing
They must have taken my marbles away
Crazy

Toys in the attic, he is crazy
Call the defendant's wife
You little shit, you're in it now
I hope they throw away the key

You should've talked to me more often than you did
But no! You had to go your own way
Have you broken any homes up lately?
Just five minutes, Worm, your Honor

Him and me alone
Baaaaaabe
Come to Mother, baby
Let me hold you in my arms

My Lord, I never meant for him to get in any trouble
Why'd he ever have to leave me?
Worm, your Honor, let me take him home
Crazy

Over the rainbow, I am crazy
Bars in the window
There must have been a door there in the wall
When I came in

Crazy
Over the rainbow, he is crazy
The evidence before the court is incontrovertible
There's no need for the jury to retire

In all the years of judging I have never heard before
Of someone more deserving of the full penalty of the law
The way you made 'em suffer
Your exquisite wife and mother

Fills me with the urge to defecate
Since, my friend
You have revealed your deepest fear
I sentence you to be exposed before your peers
Tear down the wall

"Tear down the wall, Tear down the wall, ..."

Overall Meaning

"The Trial" is a dramatic and emotionally charged song that serves as the climax of the Pink Floyd album "The Wall". In this song, the singer is put on trial for his perceived crimes against society and his own personal demons. The lyrics begin with the judge addressing the defendant as "Worm" and telling him that he was caught showing feelings of an almost human nature, which is not acceptable. The judge then reminisces about how he always knew the defendant would come to no good and how he could have "flayed him into shape" if he had been allowed to. He blames bleeding hearts and artists for letting the defendant get away with "murder" and declares his intention to "hammer him today".

The defendant's mind then wanders, and he imagines himself as crazy, with toys in the attic and his marbles taken away. He hears the judge calling his wife a little shit and hopes they throw away the key. He then seems to mourn the fact that he didn't reach out for help when he needed it and asks for just five minutes alone with the judge. The defendant's mother tries to defend him, but the judge is unsympathetic and declares that he deserves the full penalty of the law. In the end, the defendant's deepest fear is revealed, and he is sentenced to being exposed before his peers, tearing down the metaphorical wall that he has built around himself.

His love and enthusiasm for his work is so obvious, even all these years later. Probably what made him a great producer. Also a very good storyteller.

@sex6cult9revolution

Love the stories about Lou and Peter. Wish there was more on Alice Cooper.
Totally got goosebumps along with you guys when Bob told the story of writing on Comfortably Numb and he read the lyrics that Roger threw down on the table.

@peterthart531

Lack of a producer like this...and the DIY digital recording is why modern records don't hold up. The producer is key to the recording and shaping the art.

@kukurukuchudnoe

Holly molly someone just have mentioned it finally . Producer is like a coach to football team. He makes the whole play looking at a fight beeing above the fight

@rixvspinner

Bob's long list of outstanding record productions is impressive . Some of my fav's are Peter Gabriel's first album, Lou Reed Berlin, Pink Floyd The Wall, Alice Cooper Love It To Death and others, so many to list. Bob did whatever worked for getting the best performance and the overall sound he and the band wanted. He just seemed to know what worked for the band and part of that is he really got to know them personally. He knew how to tap into aspects of their talent that had not been fully utilized on prev albums in this case. Great interview Tom.

@zinghao131

Awesome summary of his entire career! Got inspired to toy around with the "Detroit Rock City" bass line (which seems to be his...) and, at the end of the day, I also had goosebumps when he read out the words for "Comfortably Numb", who wouldn't? Great interview!!!

@liannabird

Loved this interview. Tom has a way of making people loose and open. Not that Ezrin needed much prodding! This really flowed well. A joy to hear the background stories about amazing musicians’ work and processes, thanks to Bob many times.

@davemackellar6189

Brilliant interview and super engaging. This was like reading a favourite book about my favourite time period. I could listen to Bob Ezrin and Tom Power all day long. Great questions, great responses and very cool chemistry between them. Fun stuff. Well done Tom and CBC "Q" on capturing some music history with some Toronto connections.

@phillyman5000

One of the best record producer's in the world!!! He was responsible for many bands getting to the top!! :)

@curiouscollector9354

This was amazing...great job Tom and how fascinating Bob is!
