I was a circus performer in the 70s. I worked with him at the Minnesota State Fair. I swear to God, his TV appearances must have involved heavy audience coaching and laugh tracks because for his entire run at the fair the large grandstand audiences just sat silent. Hardly a single laugh. Half his act was begging for applause, which got the only laughs. Personally, I have never seen the attraction.

A special on Bob Hope that I saw with friends just a few years ago had them asking me in an agitated way to replay an interview scene in the show. I soon got what they meant when I replayed it and saw sitting very near to Bob in some movie theater seats a so-called "adopted" relative of his, named Tony. In the early 1980’s, my mom babysat the child of a doctor and his wife in NoCAL. The mother of the wife would often come by to visit her granddaughter while my mom was there babysitting, and they got to talking. Long story short…the grandmother explained that though her daughter knew she was an adopted child, what she didn’t know is that she was the child of Bob Hope and some starlet. My mom said there could be no denying, since the woman’s daughter bore a striking resemblance to Hope, especially the famous “ski slope” nose. Hope apparently fathered quite a few illegitimate children, which is why I find it ironic that he and his wife adopted their four children.

I was peripherally acquainted with one of Hope’s adopted children, who spoke very highly of Bob and Delores as parents, only complaining that their Christmases were never like the Hollywood ideal presented in all of Bob Hope’s many Christmas shows, simply because Hope was never home for the holidays with the family. So, though he may have been a major womanizer, among other things, Hope must be given credit for his outstanding efforts to entertain servicemen who couldn’t be home with their families. I never cared for him as a cue-card reading stand up, but I still love watching him in movies. Woody Allen, another notorious womanizer, credits Bob Hope’s comedic timing in movies to his own delivery, and if you think about it and watch both of them, you can really see it.

No one is perfect, and perhaps those who give a great deal to others often feel entitled then to take what they want, particularly from people wanting to give to them, which explains why so many women were willing to throw themselves at a man who, imo, was about as far away from a sexy man as one can get!

I catered Hollywood parties in my early 20's. I catered a huge party at Bob Hope's estate in Toluca Lake for his and Dolores's big 50th Wedding Anniversary. I spoke with their florist in a private butler's pantry during the party and he told me how Hope had cheated on Dolores so many times but she refused to divorce him. Fantastic video. Over the years l have heard about Hope's escapades but your video was even more complete and really made some good points.

All of the other stuff aside when Hope was incredibly wealthy and could have just retired he risked his life going into combat zones to entertain the troops which was an extremely brave thing to do.

there is no St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Toluca Lake. The nearest Catholic Church was St. Charles Borremeo, where Dolores and her family did attend. (I know a priest who was there and she was a very gracious host.) I doubt he left the majority of his estate to the Church, but I think he must have made a significant contribution to the San Fernando Mission to get the large memorial garden they made for him. (I just found out that Richie Valens (nee Valenzuela) is also buried at the SF Mission. Sad to read. I've never been one to be enthralled by the lives of celebrities- but i watched this. He was a good entertainer and had impeccable comedic timing, i thought, though it was clear all his stuff was written for him. His death ended an era. Not thrilled to know he was a lifetime cheater but it's not shocking. It's hardly surprising that Hope never won an Oscar. He was a fairly lousy actor. He only just got by playing himself. Even his comic delivery wasn't that great - it always sounded more like stand-up delivery than a character talking. And what does hosting the Oscars, however often, have to do with winning one?! There isn't an Oscar for hosting TV shows. Also, by his last Oscar-hosting years Hope had become such a dinosaur - delivering one-liners that were hugely out-of-touch with much of America, but certainly most of liberal Hollywood - that even the Oscars were embarrassed by him.

I often found him funny. Having lived a life, and being a bit jaded, I am not surprised by infidelity. It is a matter of opportunity and stars travel and are surrounded by beautiful young people. Performers are often needy show-offs and attention from young pretty people is just the ticket. Bill Cosby and Jimmy Savile made generations laugh too, but you can't just say that they're not perfect. They were and are complete monsters. Bob Hope was a POS, and deserves to be exposed for it.

In college, I knew a fellow student who was a part time police officer. He guarded Bob Hope when he came to Ashland, Oregon and stayed at the Mark Antony Hotel. During the night, a blond member of Hope's staff poked her head out of her door, and popped back in just as quickly. A little later, Hope came out of his room and tiptoed into the blond's room. He stayed there the rest of the night. Hope gave the guard a bottle of wine and a wad of money not to report it....

My sister did two tours of duty in Viet Nam with the US Army. When Hope came through on a USO visit, she said he had no compunction in making sure, and demanding, that the starlets' quarters were right next to his, and he'd pay the guard to turn a blind eye when he crept out to have his fun.

The stories about Hope are true. He was also a chronic speeder. I was in the Navy working at Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center in Monterey, CA in 1981. One night, my petty officer reported that when he was on the highway coming in to work, Hope passed him in his Porsche, going about 100 mph through a 50 zone. Hope was a mover in more ways than one. 🎉

Was a fan, thought he was funny, the affairs wasn't really a big secret, it was reported on, even read that Lucille Ball and him had some fling. Unfortunately, not so unusual Hollyweird ways, Delores Hope put up because she got him that way too plus in those days, you hung on.

He depended on cue cards when he was on TV. As he got older and his eye sight started declining, he started squinting in order to make out the words. SCTV hilariously mocked Hope's difficulty reading his cards in a sketch.

Hope stopped being funny - about the times certainly in the 60's. The scripted jokes and decline in his situation.
nbc had the problem of 2 stand outs in its line up, to the frustration of certainly Carson. There was the matter of
the ways he treated people on the road w/appearances, and the facade broke and disappointment to those that
idolized him. Hope was a hollywood celebrity, and that summarizes it w/Hope too.

To me ,Jack Benny, ans Stan Laurel are the 2 funniest men to ever come out of Hollywood,followed closely by Groucho and his brothers. They were all only human, and subject to mistakes, as we all are.

@@denniswahl-ds2jo Yeah, I’m in my upper 50s, but even as a kid I loved Jack Benny whenever I saw old clips of him. Around a decade ago I bought a CD of his old radio show and listened to it as I drove with my Dad to the beach. He remembered most of the commercials too. Benny had the best comedic timing ever. Brilliant comedian who let himself bear the brunt of so many jokes.

Going back even farther… a few years ago I “discovered” silent movies… and Buster Keaton was a genius of deadpan expressions too. I’ve bought many of his movies. Check out “Our Hospitality” if you ever get the chance. That’s my favorite, but he’s got lots of good ones, and many “shorts” too.
