near you
Bob Lamm Lyrics

It's like heaven to be, near you
Times when we're apart
I can't face my heart
Say you'll never stray
More than just two lips away
If my hours could be spent near you
Make my life worthwhile
By telling me that I'll
Spend the rest of my days near you
There is just one place for me, I'm happy when I'm near you
It's wonderful as heaven, a special kind of heaven, but only when I'm near you
Times when we're apart I wonder how I can face my heart
Say you'll never stray
More than just two lips away
If my waking hours could be spent while near you
I would be content, wonderfully content, just to be near you
Make my life worthwhile
By telling me that I'll
Spend the rest of my days
All of those happy, happy days
So near you
The lyrics of Bob Lamm's song "Near You" speak of the intense love and devotion the singer feels for their significant other. They express how being close to their loved one is like being in heaven and how it makes their life worthwhile. The singer cannot imagine their life without the presence of their partner and the thought of being apart from them is unbearable. They ask their partner not to stray and to stay close by, more than just two lips away.
The phrase "more than just two lips away" is particularly poignant as it not only refers to physical closeness but also emotional and mental intimacy. The singer wants to be completely connected with their partner and fears the pain of separation. The repetition of the line "There's just one place for me, near you" reinforces the idea of the singer's devotion and single-mindedness in their pursuit of being near their loved one.
Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of longing and a desire for connection and love. It reminds us that the people we love play an important role in our perception of happiness and fulfilment.

We used to play this 78 all the time as kids. My parents had a bunch of old 78s and we listened to a lot of them. I remember this one on Bullet particularly well.

The #1 record of the 20th Century by chart performance wasn't by Sinatra, Crosby, Elvis, The Beatles, Madonna, Michael, Whitney, or Mariah. Or even by Byron Harlan or Billy Murray from the early decades. It was this one-by a guy who never saw the Top 5 again. But it caught on at the right time. Life is funny.

actually that's not true, Beg Your Pardon reached #3 the following year, but both songs as well as the artist behind them have been largely forgotten by later generations
