During 1970 and 1971, Wailer, Marley and Tosh worked with renowned reggae producers Leslie Kong and Lee "Scratch" Perry.
They released four albums before signing to Island Records in 1972. Two more albums were created before Tosh and Wailer left the band in 1974, citing grievances over label treatment and ideological differences. Marley carried on with a new line-up, including the I-Threes that put out seven more more albums. Marley died in 1981.
The Wailers were a groundbreaking ska and reggae group, noted for songs such as "Simmer Down", "Trenchtown Rock", "Nice Time", "War", "Stir It Up" and "Get Up, Stand Up".

The lyrics of Bob Marley's song "Bus dem shut" address the issue of class distinctions and societal inequalities in Jamaica at the time. The refrain, "bread and pyaka, cut down pyaka-ism," is a call to end the unfair distribution of resources and opportunities. The term "pyaka" refers to a Jamaican term for someone who is seen as inferior or of low status. The song conveys the message that everyone deserves equal access to the basic necessities of life and opportunities for happiness.
The opening lines, "life is for man to live, bread is for man to eat," are a simple assertion of the right to a basic standard of living. The repetition of the phrase "everything ya run dung 'pon" emphasizes the idea that resources and opportunities are unfairly distributed.
The chorus, "I bus dem shut right now, fi get it," is a call for action and an assertion of the right to demand change. The song encourages listeners to stand up and demand their rights and to reject the notion that some people are inherently inferior.
Overall, "Bus dem shut" is a powerful statement on the need for social equity and the right to a basic standard of living. It is a call to action for listeners to demand change and reject the notion that society should be divided based on status.
