In Your Time
Bob Seger Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In your time
The innocence will fall away
In your time
The mission bells will toll
All along
The corridors and river beds
There'll be sign
In your time

Towering waves
Will crash across your southern cape
Massive storms
Will reach your eastern shores
Fields of green
Will tumble through your summer days
By design
In your time

Feel the wind
And set yourself the bolder course
Keep your heart
As open as a shrine
You'll sail the perfect line

And after all
The dead ends and the lessons learned
After all
The stars have turned to stone
There'll be peace
Across the great unbroken void
All benign
In your time

You'll be fine
In your time

Overall Meaning

The song “In Your Time” by Bob Seger is a beautiful ballad of hope, encouragement and inspiration. The lyrics speak to the idea that everything in life happens “in your time,” and that although there will be struggles and challenges, everything will work out in the end. The opening lines of the song set the tone, with Seger singing that “the innocence will fall away” and the “mission bells will toll.” These lyrics conjure up images of growing up and coming to terms with the reality of the world, with its challenges and obstacles.

Seger paints a picture of a world that is constantly changing and growing, with towering waves crashing across the southern cape and massive storms reaching the eastern shores. But even in the face of these challenges, there is hope and beauty to be found. The fields of green will tumble through summer days, and there will be signs along the corridors and river beds. The lyrics encourage the listener to feel the wind, set themselves a bolder course, and keep their heart open like a shrine. By doing so, they will sail the perfect line and find peace across the great unbroken void.

The final lines of the song offer reassurance that everything will be okay, even after all the dead ends and lessons learned, and when the stars have turned to stone. The listener will be fine, in their own time. This song is an uplifting message that reminds us that although life can be difficult, we will get through it and find peace and acceptance in the end.

on No Man's Land

I always liked 'No Man's Land' and equated it to all the times I'd get underway (ships at sea) especially when I was a younger Sailor. I always felt safer away from shore riding a wave that never crested.
