Everybody's Talkin'
Bobby Bare Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody's talking at me
I don't hear a word they're saying
Only the echoes of my mind

People stopping staring
I can't see their faces
Only the shadows of their eyes
I'm going where the sun keeps shining
Thru' the pouring rain
Going where the weather suits my clothes
Backing off of the North East wind

Sailing on summer breeze
And skipping over the ocean like a stone

Overall Meaning

In Bobby Bare's song "Everybody's Talkin'", the singer is in a state of mind where he is feeling disconnected from those around him. This is evident from the first line itself when he says "Everybody's talking at me, I don't hear a word they're saying". His preoccupation with his own thoughts and feelings is so intense, that he is unable to discern what others are saying to him. He is absorbed in the echo of his own mind. He is trying to find inner peace and tranquility by distancing himself from the daily grind of life. He is seeking a place where he can feel free from the chaos of the world and the thoughts that cloud his mind. However, he is unable to completely shut himself off from the outside world as he can still sense "only the shadows of their eyes".

The next few lines of the song reveal that the singer is on a journey, physically and metaphorically. He is going "where the sun keeps shining, thru' the pouring rain, going where the weather suits my clothes, backing off of the North East wind, sailing on summer breeze and skipping over the ocean like a stone". This journey is not just about physical movement, but an attempt to find a new way of looking at life, to see it from a different perspective. He is seeking to find his own place in this world, one where he can be free from the pressures of society.
