Brown, alongside frequent collaborator Teddy Riley, is noted as one of the pioneers of new jack swing: a fusion of hip hop and R&B. Brown started his career in the R&B and pop group New Edition, from its inception in 1981 until his exit from the group in December 1985.

Once he started a solo career, Brown enjoyed commercial and critical success with his second album Don't Be Cruel (1988) which spawned five Billboard Hot 100 top 10 singles, including the number one hit "My Prerogative", and the Grammy Award-winning "Every Little Step". In 1989, Brown contributed two songs to the soundtrack of Ghostbusters II. In 1992, Brown married superstar singer Whitney Houston, with whom he later had a daughter named Bobbi Kristina Brown. The couple's drug issues and domestic disputes made them tabloid fodder.

Brown's next album Bobby (1992) spawned several singles including "Humpin' Around", "Get Away", and "Good Enough", however, sales of Bobby did not reach the level of its predecessor.

Brown also appeared in the films A Thin Line Between Love and Hate and Two Can Play That Game. He returned to New Edition for a reunion album and tour from 1996 to 1997, and returned with all six members for another stint in 2005. Brown and Houston starred in the 2005 reality show Being Bobby Brown; Houston filed for divorce two years later in 2007.

I don't get the comparison. Bobby was one of the biggest artists of the late 80's and early 90's despite his bad boy ways. His popularity only started to wane once he married Whitney Houston and lost a good chunk his female fans since he was no longer single. The ridicule he started to receive and subsequent hate, came as a result of his ill-advised (but entertaining) reality show with Whitney and with many people blaming him for Whitney's drug problems (as well as the fact that he got arrested for hitting Whitney) and eventually her death. Make no mistake though, Bobby was a well respected artist when this video came out and was rewarded with Grammys and many other accolades during this time.

Beiber is one of the most hated musicians out right now. He gets trashed left and right in just about every magazine and on just about every website. Media personalities diss him on the regular. People spent thousands of dollars on a billboard and even presented the white house a legit petition to have Obama deport him back to Canada. The only ones keeping Beiber popular are his teenage fans. Beiber is not even respected by most of his fellow musicians--something Bobby always had.

Chris Brown beat his girlfriend to a bloody pulp but is still winning awards and getting nominated to for the highest honors in music, still having #1 albums and top 10 singles, and still getting prestigious invites to perform on award shows. Clearly, Chris Brown's alleged demonizing hasn't stopped him from getting "rewarded." Beiber's a douche, but I've never heard of him beating a woman to a bloody pulp, much less "worse shit" than that. I can't even imagine what's worse shit than that.

I just got back from the New Edition concert in Vegas. It was extraordinary. Bobby did his thing. So proud of him that he was able to put the past to rest and join the other members for a memorable concert. That is what it is all about the music. You go Bobby.

I’m glad Bobby got to experience the solo success he did even if it was for a few years bc his peak was MASSIVE! In 1989 he outsold every other popular artist at the time with Don’t Be Cruel. Performance wise Bobby had James Brown/Michael Jackson type of stage presence. And he was arguably just as good of a dancer in his peak. He wasn’t traditionally a godlike singer like a Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, El Debarge, or Johnny Gill but he carried his own vocally in his songs. Bobby shined on stage that’s why he’s known as the KING OF STAGE! He also was one of the first popular r&b artists that consistently rapped in his songs. Him and Teddy Riley were the main pioneers of the New Jack Swing sound that dominated r&b/pop music from the late 80s to early 90s.

However, "Teddy Riley" was the only pioneer who created the sound & subgenre of New Jack Swing music, no one else, not Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky or Mike, sorry my friend. Bobby & other artists might have recorded songs with a New Jack Swing sound. But, more than likely those songs were written & produced by Teddy in the first place. Teddy was "New Jack Swing" but he wasn't the only guy in town dominating the 80's/90's music charts. I agree Teddy Riley definitely played a big part in music. Yet you've forgotten other major players who changed the game in music back then? Like Babyface & L.A. Reid, Jam & Lewis, or Prince & Quincy, for starters. You do realize Babyface wrote & produced most of the songs on the "Don't Be Cruel" LP for Bobby, right? Matter of fact this song right here "Rock Wit'cha" is a jam Babyface wrote along with Don't Be Cruel, Every Little Step, Roni, etc... If you grew up back then don't sleep on Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, cuz he also played a big part to the soundtrack of your childhood for sure, my dude.
