Splish Splash
Bobby Darin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Splish, splash, I was takin' a bath
Long about a Saturday night, yeah
A rub dub, just relaxin' in the tub
Thinkin' everythin' was alright

Well, I stepped out the tub
I put my feet on the floor
I wrapped the towel around me and I
Opened the door

And then a-splish, splash
I jumped back in the bath
Well, how was I to know
There was a party goin' on?

There was a-splishin' and a-splashin'
Reelin' with the feelin'
Movin' and a-groovin'
Rockin' and a-rollin', yeah, yeah

Bing, bang, I saw the whole gang
Dancin' on my living room rug, yeah
Flip, flop, they was doin' the bop
All the teens had the dancin' but

There was lollipop with a Peggy Sue
Good golly, Miss Molly was-a even there, too
A- well-a, splish, splash, I forgot about the bath
I went and put my dancin' shoes on, yeah

I was a-rollin' and a-strollin'
Reelin' with the feelin'
Movin' and a-groovin'
Splishin' and a-splashin', yeah

Yes, I was a-splishin' and a-splashin'
I was a-rollin' and a-strollin'
Yeah, I was a-movin' and a-groovin'
We was a-reelin' with the feelin'
We was a-rollin' and a-strollin'
Movin' with the groovin'
Splish, splash, yeah

Splishin' and a-splashin'
One time I was splishin' and a-splashin'
Ooh, I was movin' and a-groovin'
Yeah, I was splishin' and a-splashin'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash" describe the unexpected turn of events that the songwriter experiences when he steps out of his bath to find a wild dance party happening in his living room. This humorous scenario is painted with detail and energy, as Darin describes himself wrapping a towel around his body before opening the door, only to jump back into the bath when he sees the partygoers. The song's chorus is catchy and fun, emphasizing the splashing and rocking that happens during the impromptu dance party.

At its core, "Splish Splash" is a lighthearted tribute to teenage fun and mischief. Darin's lyrics capture the thrill of finding unexpected joy and excitement, even in mundane moments like taking a bath. By the end of the song, Darin has fully embraced the party atmosphere, forgetting all about the bath he was planning to take and joining in on the fun.

Overall, "Splish Splash" is a playful and upbeat song that celebrates the joys of youth and spontaneity. It captures a moment in time when anything seems possible, and the only goal is to let loose and have a good time.

I was just the ornery little brother when my sister and her friends were bopping to this song. Looked up and played this song for a granddaughter who thought it was Elmo of Sesame Street who did this originally. Ha ha ha ha! I love it. To my wonderful sister Jocey who is now suffering from dementia, I love you and remember you as that great big sister who bopped around to the good old rock and roll while doing chores in that old Iowa farmhouse

@ArthurMrgan

I love how you refer to them as your friends

@retrorocket55

@ronfullerton3162 Hey Ron- I was wondering if your sister can still connect to/with rock & roll? I'm 73 and have long covid, with brain fog which is indistinguishable from dementia (from where I'm sitting) 😂 For some reason, a lot of the GREAT music I was digging on at 12 or 13 is coming to mind- core memories I'm trying not to lose..

I've never seen someone genuinely love taking a bath as much as Bobby Darin.

My two year old loves baths more than Bobby Darin, but only when Bobby Darin sings about it.
