Hendricks was a member of The Swallows, The Flyers, and sang lead with The Drifters before becoming a successful solo act (he sang The Drifters' "Drip Drop").
His single "Itchy Twitchy Feeling," which was covered by his former band soon after it began attracting radio airplay, hit the U.S. charts, reaching #5 on the Black Singles chart and #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1958. Hendricks's only other charting single, "Psycho," was a novelty song depicting a psychiatrist talking with a patient. Psycho peaked at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. New York City disc jockey Dr. Jive (Tommy Smalls) was the voice of the psychiatrist on "Psycho."
From 1961, off and on, through 2008, Bobby Hendricks worked as lead singer with Bill Pinkney's Original Drifters and appeared with them on PBS in the Doo Wop 51 television broadcast and Doo Wop Love Songs, singing "Stand By Me" with Bill Pinkney, Charlie Thomas, and Ben E. King.

I also took exception to the 'own version of the Bible's line. It's a translation (as are ALL Bibles not in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek where the spealkers spoke in such). Go to a NON-witness, and youll find 20 versions of each verse making any discrepancies easily picked out. You can't 'sneak' a scripture in, and they're not trying. Wherever it differs, and it's rare that it does, the reason is other scriptures (plural) that show why it should be examined, and then the original language is consulted for confirmation.

Its not a 'We want everyone to believe X...so let's write X in there' situation.

And for the record, j Jesus' time, his followers were former prostitutes, tax collectors, physicians, priests of other religions who followed him instead, and more. They didn't all think the same and neither do Jehovah's Witnesses.

You have to study, typically 6 months or more, and REQUEST to join. People who have done that don't call their own beliefs 'rules.' So, when you hear that word, you should question that persons expertise.

Do vegans consider it a 'rule' that you can't eat meat? Is someone who calls it a 'rule' really a vegan? Doesn't that say something about them?

From my experience, They’re very humble people

In fact earlier this year, when my dad passed away they volunteered to help me with his funeral arrangements and even gave me a job.

And to top it all off I had only met them a few weeks prior. No strings attached 🙏🙏

update Feb 2020: im surprised this thread is still going 😳 lol. well i had some car problems recently. engine completely blew out. didnt know what to do....im a full time employee + full time student. I NEED a car.well guess who came to my rescue again...Jehovah witnesses... they helped me find an AMAZING deal on a car with barely any mileage + brand new engine. say what you want about the "EVIL" jehovah witnesses but they're good in my book.

As for Serena like a lot of 'stars' that grew up in the JW cult - they are all FRINGE JWs. She is a known Black lives matter and LGBTQ Advocate. Serena can also famously appeared in an expletive video with Beyonce in which she could be seen twerking and dancing provocatively. In Jan 2018 she called on a fellow Tennis star to apologise after he tweeted that a visit to a Gay club " Made his eyes bleed"

So in summary this list is a farce....They can claim it, they vocalize it, but their life choices are not a reflection of what the watchtower preaches. This is the JW 1%... They ride the fence when it is convenient for them. And yet, they are not held to the same stringent rules the rank and file are.I respect her for living life HER OWN WAY...but it makes things unfair. A lot of JW'S had talents they weren't permitted to follow, and had to forego all in the name of remaining humble AND putting 'Jehovah 1st'.

Being a Famous person or having name recognition does give credibility to Jehovah’s name, his people or his work! As most of know he doesn’t need it. Many of us have heard of his fame whether we choose to acknowledge it or not. He is the God that caused the great flood that parted of the Red Sea and that is going to bring Armageddon upon the present world in his own due time. This Jehovah has never been enamored with famous people. This is no shock to us.
It should be apparent that the Creator Jehovah has absolutely no need for the profession of any famous person present or past, living or asleep in death to validate the truth of his great name and purpose as the true God.
It would be a mistake to conclude that the assertion or endorsement of famous people such as entertainers make the truth legitimate give it credibility, validation or even nullification to the pure worship of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

One’s profession to be a Jehovah’s Witness or simply hearing that someone is one does not add too or take anything away from Jehovah’s great fame and the people that represent him.
Mere facts or rumors regarding an imperfect human effort prominent or otherwise to do what is right as a Jehovah’s Witness or change his lifestyle, does not take anything away from Jehovah. Being the best Witness one can be certainly adds to Jehovah’s great fame especially as we carry out our preaching commission and in demonstrating Jehovah’s cardinal quality of Love
The insignificant profession on the part of someone famous is not necessarily needed by the true God to Vindicate his name and Sovereignty!
The little validity and or credibility comes when the entertainer or whoever else acknowledges of Jehovah’s name the role of his son Jesus and the Kingdom that many were taught to pray is regarded as the only hope for humanity both publicly and privately. Jehovah is the one that allows the person the privilege to represent him (Isa 60:15) The sad part about it is when we fail to represent him properly by ‘using the world to the full’ people are ‘stumbled’ and understandably so.
It is not uncommon to hear entertainers and others thank God for giving them their exceptional gifts and abilities to do something in the field of entertainment, athleticism or secular education that they feel is God gifted- but in what sense? Every human is created in gods image and is limited in his ability to do something as well as another imperfect human can. Discipline practice and focus also goes along way but that does not necessarily make a person gifted in every case. Their thank expressions of thank are not needed by Jehovah as their accomplishments have brought no glory to Jehovah. Such accomplishments are not what wants or needs as a “Witness”. To Jehovah it is not the priority discipline.
How sad that the claim or perception that because someone famous decides to reject or accept something valuable this somehow deemphasizes it’s noble purpose that has benefitted someone in small and large ways past and present be they a prominent figure entertainers, educators high officials, religious leaders, or anyone else; moreover such a persons claim does not benefit Jehovah nor does take anything away from his glory even that person should err or fall short in one way or another.
Jehovah God is one that extends a vestige of his dignity to the person one by allowing him to be a recipient of God’s undeserved kindness and love as he has extended that person the privilege of bearing his name as a Witness that bears his name!

Jehovah’s name or the truth when heard by a person who comes to know of it benefits the famous person introduced to it not Jehovah as creator. Psalms 50:1
For some reason too the frail human mind the mention of a prominent human figure or hearing that they may be examining matters that pertain to the teachings of Jehovah’s Witnesses somehow gives some people the impression that our work and activity as Jehovah’s Witnesses should now be assigned a certain legitimacy or not that they may have not formerly considered worthy of before mostly due to prejudices or not understanding certain things about what the Bible actually teaches.

It is not the name recognition of the entertainer, educator or high official or religious leader or anyone else that validates the truth when acknowledges Jehovah’s name or the truth publicly when comes to know a little Bible truth. Jehovah is the one that does so allowing the person the undeserved kindness of bearing his name! (Isa 60:15)

Just a suggestion, but if you are going to debate a position, you might want to study the subject you are debating. Secondly, the greek word for "firstborn" is prototokos. It is a title that means pre eminent, it does not mean first "created". The word for that is protoktizo which is not used here. Just like king David was the youngest yet was called firstborn and many other examples. You are trusting a modern day governing body that is teaching you the heresy called arianism using modern day terms to interpret ancient meanings incorrectly. You might want to study that too. One of the many problems with the WT is that they give people such as yourself a false sense of confidence in what you believe but end up making you look foolish to serious bible readers. Corrections, Prince did become and remained a JW till his death, the Wagons mother was a JW: the boys are not, Rocha is a JW, the Williams are not. They believe but are not members. Howard is not a JW. In order to be classified as a JW, you have to be baptized and actively practicing. The distinction is baptized not just a believer.

There are two famous female tennis players who also claim to be JWS and Michael Jackson claimed it. Yet, they all seem rather obsessed with their careers as opposed to telling others about the Good News of the Kingdom. So claims are very easy to make. It is living as a Christian that isn' t so easy. No, I don't mean attending meetings and preaching. I mean living and thinking like a Christian should at all times.

Also, what message are we sending to others when we appear more interested in fame and fortune than in spiritual matters? Are we serving as a stumbling block by encouraging the wrong attitude? If we are, then who is happy, God or Satan?

I respect Jehovah’s Witness even tho I don’t believe in everything they say. My mom is a Jehovah wittness and I remember when I was 10 she took me too a Kingdom Hall. The moment I walked in 3 people hugged me and a little girl said I was pretty. Really different from any other church I’ve been too. I go there once in a while.

I remember in school a lil boy had to leave class all the time for certain activities and everytime he would cry. As children, we asked why does she make him cry? She explained it was his religious beliefs and had nothing to fi with her. My 💔 goes out to those children whom arent allowed to draw a pumpkin cuz its a sin 🙄

@Tacoman Gaming it is hard though when you aren't born into it and you have kids. I believe it 100% yet the thought of telling my kids there's no santa or tooth fairy- I just can't do it. Especially when you have family that you would have to cut off. My mum introduced me to it as a kid, she believes it but doesn't practice and even when I was trying hard to go to meetings I'd completed the study and should have been on to baptism she was sending birthday and Christmas stuff. I'm the worst now because I've turned my back on jehovah and that's worse than never knowing the truth 😔

following the bible in abstaining from blood is a protection. before i returned to Jehovah i had a blood transfusion and found out that they dont screen for many diseases and viruses. Now im infected with a chronic virus that has made my life awful. If i would of refused a transfusion i would of been saved from that. Our medical system makes society think that transfusions are the only way to save or help others. This is mis information and its all about making $$$

I always felt like an outsider at school, couldn’t join in any holidays that I desolately wanted to, and is of that wasn’t bad enough, was an outsider with our own relatives. Seeing photos of their Christmas gatherings and bdays and knowing I didn’t get to join the fun with my cousins. And little things like being told Santa and the tooth fairy and Easter bunny, etc. are all fake to a young child? Being a JW is a childhood innocence killer.

I've read some of these comments and wow. Religion can be a beautiful thing if you are given the right Information. There are some who deny the truth even when it is the truth because it can be hard to bare. In a world FULL of hatefulness there are few good people, Yet Jehovah's organization managed to find millions of them. I've seen and heard most of these insults already "cult" ,"love bomb" etc. But it is my faith that helps me carry on. knowing that these people are not tarnishing our names, but bringing reproach on Jehovahs'. To any witnesses who may read this comment I pray you keep your faith just as strong!

Growing up as a JW I was taught you can't be a celebrity and a practicing JW. Because I was taught it was against the religion to be idolized in any way, shape or form OR to idolize anybody at all and you should only idolize Jehovah God. Why is enjoying someone’s music or talent of any kind idolizing them? I have always cringed when I hear the title American Idol! I can’t imagine idolizing any human being! The term Idol to me means something you worship, depend on for spiritual maturity,strength to make you stronger when tempted to do wrong. What does that have to do with another human? These are qualities you seek from higher powers than yourself! A song, poem or dance is not going to help lead you to spiritual enrichment.Worshiping a person seems to me to be gross overkill! Save that level of adoration for deity’s.

It depends on what a person does. We don't know. As for Prince, even after he was baptized, he hung out with celebrities backstage, but they weren't allowed to use bad language, he made them pay a "swear tax" and had to pay the jar when they cussed lol. This had been told by celebrities on talk shows, he also used to give them the Awake and Watchtower magazines. Let's let Jehovah be the judge of what these celebrities do, because that's basically between them and Jehovah. The elders can't hang our with them backstage all the time and watch them they have jobs and families like the rest of us.

My neighbors are Jehovah’s Witnesses. I am gay and I live with my husband. When I became very sick they would come and bring us food. That was the most Christian thing I’ve seen a “Christian” do. When our friends start to complain about Christians I always tell them leave the Jehovah witness is out of this they practice what god taught.

The ideology always made sense to me. I just told my dad I don't want dedicate young and fail young, I was 18. I'm apart of the world, 7 years now but I still go back and they treat me with the same welcoming arms like I never left although they know I haven't been living a holy life. The media can overexgerate with JW and celebs, but the elders are usually more strict with the celebs because they have a huge influence and following that can tarnish the reputation of JW. But it backfires the opposite way.

@Carlos . Many were shunning me unofficially and advising others not to associate with me because I was not attending meetings regularly, even though I explained that it was due to health problems. Since I could not have non-witness friends, this made my suffering more intense due to extreme social isolation.

Years before that, I was also persecuted by this JW sister who disagreed with the decision to have me be the weekly Bible Study conductor after just being baptized. One sister was so offended that she immediately left the Bible Study group as a protest. Another in that study group, an elderly sister who had been 20 years a JWs, kept talking about racism during house to house ministry. Her mind seemed obsessively focused on what race she imagined that I was identifying with rather than on preaching the Good News of the Kingdom.

As an actual JW, I can tell you right now that, although it's awesome that they hold our beliefs true and worth practicing, there's no chance that some of these people are actually preaching door-to-door. The way that we preach is through groups that are organized and stick together. That means that in order to be preaching door to door, it's necessary to be publicly seen in a Christian way by standards of the Bible. Wearing lavish clothes, marrying outside of the religion, etc. don't agree with that. Although it's awesome that those listed are believers or have a respect for the religion (which as a Witness is hard to come by nowadays), it's just not possible that they're fully part of the congregation. I hope that they can continue studying though and fully dedicate themselves to Jehovah one day :D

Dedication can be easily feigned in the service of ulterior motives. My former wife and her mother feigned dedication because of marriage goals that they had. They were never true believers but only went through the motions. Later they revealed that they had always been spiritists dabbling in the occult.

The thing is a lot of times the Watch Tower doesn't want you to try to become a celebrity or anything like that however if you do become a celebrity or become serious about being a jahovahs witness after having become a celebrity there still more then happy to use your status as a celebrity as sort of a weapon and as points for propping themselves up and for making themselves look more appealing in the eyes of potential converts.

There are definitely some really good people in the religion. But like any other group there's obviously some pretty bad people you wouldn't want to associate yourself with. The main thing I was always taught as a JW was just to try to be kind to everyone no matter who they are. As long as your intention is pure that's the important thing. I'm not gonna say that I agree with absolutely everything that's preached but I do stand by the witnesses. I hope you do take a bit of your time to listen in on a meeting or talk to a witness someday. Whether you would decide to join or not after that is ultimately up to you. I do hope you have a wonderful life either way

People who are NOT JW. Everybody who attends even once they think is a JW because they dont understand what it takes to be one of them. Being a JW is much more than attending a few meetings in a few months or even years. I am not YET a JW but I am trying and is has been a LONG time for me to qualify and putting my life in order to become one of them, but for everybody who knows me they think I am a JW. @Hi Hi Acually they y kind trust me our congregation elders go on every month or so to check on how they are doing and they only dispellowship some one because Jehovah expects them to keep the congregation clean and if someone is truly sorry they can come back to the congregation and serve Jehovah. Lastly all elders don’t sleep for days when discussing the topic of someone who made a serious sin they even pray for that person and then collect evidence and 2 witness who saw it happen if no one saw. It happen then they stay. Also for your kind info my mother had cancer and everyday someone from our hall brought us a meal and read a encouraging scripture. Also Jehovah gave us free will for a reason and we recognize that no one is perfect we all make mistakes and when we are truly sorry for what we did Jehovah will forgive us. If that’s not love then Idk what is.

I truly admire these celebrities because they know how to keep the balance between their work and the ministry...I used to be active in our religion (which is Jehova's Witnesses) bit even though I am no longer part of it I still consider myself as one of them cuz I truly love Jehovah with all my heart and promised myself not to change my religion and will get back to him when the time is right...

What you people need to know is that; being a Jehovah's witnesses is not something you born with, and no one is raised to be a Jehovah's witnesses, you may just born and raised in a family of Jehovah's witnesses, but that doesn't make you one of Jehovah's witnesses, you only become one when you choose to be, and that symbolized by baptism, so a person can be coming to the kingdom hall, but if they are not baptized, THEY ARE NOT ONE OF US, they are just the people who are in agreement with the Bible teaching, and they are happy to be with us.
In addition to that, our doors are always open to every human, despite their way of life... So not everyone you see coming out of our kingdom halls is a witness, some are just the beautiful people who love peace like we do, and they are happy to be with us.

@vx Vivanvich I'm sorry but that is a very Rosey picture of what occurs and is not fact based. At my recent regional convention, a 10 year old was baptized. When it comes to signing lifetime contracts with penalties such as complete social ostracism if you change your mind about what is currently taught, a 10 year old is little more equiped than a baby.

If the children of JWs decide they don't want to attend meetings, this isn't some lackluster affair. They are frequently made to attend anyways, threatened with being kicked out at 18, and yes "forced" to do as the parents require. The testimony of literally thousands flies in the face of this.

Did I understand correctly you are from Malawi? Have you ever read brother Franz issue with the way the horrific abuse was handled in your country so many decades ago? The double standards?

I like the quote that JWs are not pushy. “If you’re not interested, just say so.” And in the Watchtower publication, Reasoning From the Scriptures, to advise on handling “conversation stoppers, for what to say when someone says “I’m not interested”, there’s a script for how to continue the conversation after a person declares lack of interest. @Anthony Ah. Yes, you are quite right. Some of it is not up to date at all. But some basic stuff in there beneficial for teaching, reproving, and setting things straight. I was hoping a couple of years ago that they would update it but I guess not. But some of the basic stuff is still good for basic Bible teachings which never change. Thanks Anthony!

JWs aren't going door to door "looking for converts". The only objective is to discuss the Bible and help people (that want help) to better learn what is in the bible so that they can make informed decisions about their spirituality.

Yes exactly right. The scripture in Matthew says this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth and then the end will come. We do this because Jesus said this must be done. People have free will and can choose what they believe. We view im this as a life saving work, in that because Jesus said and then the end will come, this is being delivered to people as a warning with a good outcome if they choose God’s way. And the Witnesses aren’t the only ones who know this truth. However they are the only ones actively preaching it.

Please remember that the JW’s doing the door knocking are actually “keeping time” spent and have to report their time to the local elders. If you try and find any Biblical authority for this you have to find in the book of 1st and 2nd Opinions (aka..The over 1000 rules JW’s are expected to abide by)

@John Newsome I would agree, if they did mandatory donations or tithes or something. You can go to a JW meeting everyday for the rest of your life and never pay a cent if you don’t want to. So… if anything adding more people comes with the possibility of a financial burden. Not really a good business move.

We all have the same Bible. Jehovah’s Witnesses just decided to translate the Bible, to make it a little bit more understandable. So, we called that translation, the New World translation of the holy Scriptures. Only because some people were not really understanding the English utilized in other versions like the king James version, the American standard version, and so on and so forth.

You are misinformed. The NWT isn’t just about putting in Jehovah’s name or using modern English. Compare scriptures that refer to worshiping Jehovah and Jesus. They use the word “worship” for Jehovah and “do obedience” for Jesus... yet in the kingdom interlinear the Greek word is the same “ego ami” meaning “I am”. The NWT removes the deity of Christ.

Prince was cool. I met him in a nightclub in San Diego 1992, he was by himself just watching. I said where's your bodyguards, he laughed and said " ain't nobody wanna kill me!!" I grew up in the truth and tbh I have nothing against it and that I’m not attending meetings anymore.... I don’t hate JW’s nor do I condone violence towards them.... My grandparents more specifically taught me since I was a child... I feel bad I let them and Jehovah down since I’m joining the army now, but I know I’m not ready and I feel like maybe I’m just not cut out to being a JW right now in my life.... I was always told I can’t eat at two tables at once and that’s very true... I recognize Jehovah and still know he is God no matter where I am.... I hope he can forgive me one day, but like I said, I’m not ready to be one of his faithful people right now....

@Jacob Lagera Here's a couple of examples of "information control" as defined by the BITE model. As a Jehovah's Witness, you are discouraged from higher education. Don't you find that strange? Where in the Bible does it say we should not educate ourselves? In reality, this is just one of many ways this organisation keeps you dumbed-down so that you are less likely to challenge their doctrines.

You're also not supposed to be exposing yourself to information from "worldly sources". By talking to me here, you're breaking that mandate. Again, this is another example of them restricting your mind's field of view. How do you explain these doctrines which are not Biblical?

JW practices conform to the "BITE" model, a methodology that's used to identify the nefarious behaviour of cults i.e. Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control, Emotional Control. With very few exceptions, almost every criterion within each of these categories can be attributed to Jehovah's Witnesses.

What business is it of yours what any person has done? A person's relationship is between himself and his God, not between himself and you. People need not come to you for forgiveness in order to gain it.. Forgiveness is guaranteed based on the Ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ who died for our sins. ❤️💛💚💜💙💝💕I truly believe that no matter what people say whether they are or not Jehovah’s Witness they do cherish that name Jehovah, and whether they decide now or later to become one they always know that he is the God of this earth and that he calls the shots sometimes people go through crazy things in life that sometimes get in the way of doing the right thing but it doesn’t mean that they don’t want to do the right thing it means that life overwhelms them and the overwhelming factors of life gets in the way and sometimes people feel that what they wanna to do may never happen but the one thing that will always be appreciative to Jehovah is that they recognize him as the true God and that he gives them the strength to make the dedication so that eventually they will come to recognize him in their 20s or may not dedicate to their 40 some recognize him in their 40s and may not dedicate to there 60 but as long as they give him his credit because he is the true God and he’s patient and he’s waiting for them to make the change but it doesn’t mean they never will make it as long as they believe in him anything is possible at any time people can change every day and only the God in Psalms 83:18 which is not only in the New World translation like people think, it’s also in the King James Version Bible that’s known throughout the whole land that recognizes God as Jehovah in Psalms 83:18 Jehovah doesn’t want nobody forcefully he says he loves a happy and cheerful giver so when they’re ready they’ll make their dedication and recognizing the name is usually the first opening Path to his road may Jehovah bless use all and may everybody see him as the true God because only in John 3:16 says for( he )remembers (he ) loved the world so much (he) gave his only begotten son so that we may have life so people change all the time it just Has to be right for them❤️💛💚💙💜💝💕

If you hear of the org getting punished for policies that has created victims, those victims must be liars and the court cases must be fake. True or False

Just one major correction one second into this video. Jehovah Witnesses are NOT a division of Christians. They do follow their own version of their own bible. They are not Christians because they do not believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son. They believe Jesus was created by God and is not God in the flesh. This makes their belief system something other than Christian. They do however consider themselves as Christians but their theology is not compatible with the Christian faith. They do not believe they are saved by Faith alone in Jesus Christ, because they do not believe what the bible says about hell. They have many unusual beliefs that are extremely different than traditional Christianity.
