Bobby's sound mixed together Latin rhythms in a way very similar to what the late great Cal Tjader was doing at the time.
The Bobby Montez Quintet created a cool and hip sound and had many followers. Their performances in and around Los Angeles were many times sold-out and included stops at L.A.'s most prestigious Jazz clubs.
Montez surrounded himself with top-talent from the Los Angeles area; Mike Gutierrez on Timbales; Luis Miranda on Congas; pianist Carlos Avelar, who also sat in on vibes when Montez switched to the bass or piano; and Jimmy Baiz on bass. In later years, the Bobby Montez unit featured the sound of Ruben Provencio on bass.

Thank you for the upload. I had many of Bobbý's album but a "friend" of mine I use to play congas with would borrow one album from me and put another one inside of the album cover he borrowed and later I found only empty album covers. Some firiend eh? Swinging at the "M" reminds me of the M Club which I believe was on East 7th St in L.A. east of the bridge. I saw Cal Tjader with Willie Bobo on timbales and Mongo Santamaria on congas, and congero Eddie Cano and his group in the 1950's and 1960's. Bobby Montez and many latin musicians would come after hours, 2 A.M. until 6 A.M. to the basement of the Pancake House near Telegraph Road and jam.
