If I Give My Heart to You
Bobby Vinton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I give my heart to you, will you handle it with care?
Will you always treat me tenderly and in every way be fair?
If I give my heart to you, will you give me all your love?
Will you swear that you'll be true to me by the light that shines above?
And will you sigh with me when I'm sad
Smile with me when I'm glad
And always be as you are with me tonight
Think it over and be sure
Please don't answer 'til you do
When you promise all these things to me
Then I'll give my heart to you

If I give my heart to you, will you handle it with care?
Will you always treat me tenderly and in every way be fair?
If I give my heart to you, will you give me all your love?
Will you swear that you'll be true to me by the light that shines above?
And will you sigh with me when I'm sad
Smile with me when I'm glad
And always be as you are with me tonight

Think it over and be sure
Please don't answer 'til you do

When you promise all these things to me
Then I'll give my heart to you

Overall Meaning

Bobby Vinton's "If I Give My Heart to You" is a tender love song that expresses the doubts of a man when giving his heart to someone. The song is full of questions and expectations, asking if the person he is about to give his heart to will treat it with care, love him truly and always be by his side. Bobby's voice is soothing, and the lyrics are gentle, inviting listeners to be vulnerable and honest with their emotions. The song is a sweet reminder to carefully consider the silver linings and doubts that come with falling in love.

The lyrics suggest a longing for a committed relationship where emotions are reciprocated, and there is security in knowing the other person is equally invested. The last verse of the song asks the intended recipient of the singer's heart not to answer until they are sure they can fulfill the promises he seeks. This request shows the desire to build something meaningful with the one he loves. The song's message is clear, that love requires mutual vulnerability and trust, and the person who is willing to give it should be cautious to avoid heartbreak.

I can't begin to list the reasons why I idolize this gentleman. A. the fact that he's from Canonsburg, PA, (only 30 miles south of Pittsburgh, so we claim it on the 'proximity principle'...) B. he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music (Ph.D.) from Duquesne University, in Pittsburgh. (for those not 'in the know' about the Arts, this is equivalent to being awarded an honorary Doctorate in Engineering from M.I.T.) C. the sheer beauty of his songs, the melodies, his voice, the whole post-war vibe......and the fact that he was sincerely humble and grounded enough to graciously decline when his hometown wanted to erect a statue of him on its main street.
Bobby Vinton's life and works = the definition of Master.

I like Nat King Cole version, it was on 2 or 3 of my LP, but surprisingly not in any of his cd i own.
Recently i bought Doris Day version and like it a lot.
This one is quite nice too, especially the piano is very lifely and sweet, complimenting his sweet and tender voice... i like it !
