The Days of Sand and Shovels
Bobby Vinton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I noticed her the first time
I was outside running barefoot in the rain
She lived in the house next door
Her nose was pressed against the window pane

When I looked at her she smiled
And showed a place where two teeth used to be
And I heard her ask her mom if she
Could come outside and play with me

Soon the day's of sand and shovels
Gave way to the mysteries of life
Then I noticed she was changing and I
Looked at her through different eyes

We became as one and knew a love
Without beginning or an end
And everyday I lived with her
Was like a new day dawning once again

And I've loved her since every doll was Shirley Temple
Soda pop was still a nickel
Jam was on her fingertips
Milk was circled on her lips

After many years our live grew
Silent and at night I heard her cry
And when she left me in the fall I knew
That it would be our last goodbye

I was man enough to give her
Everything she needed for a while
And searching for a perfect love
I found that I could not give her a child

Now she lives a quiet life
And is the mother of a little girl
Every time I pass her house
My thoughts go back into another world

Because I see her little girl
Her nose is pressed against the window pane
She thinks I'm a lonely man
Who wants to come inside out of the rain

And I've loved her since every doll was shirley Temple
Soda pop was still a nickel

Jam was on her fingertips
Milk was circled on her lips

Overall Meaning

The Days of Sand and Shovels by Bobby Vinton tells a story of childhood love that grows into adulthood, with bittersweet memories of a love that lasted a lifetime. The first stanza shows a young boy who falls in love with his neighbour, who is watching him through the window. The innocence of childhood love is portrayed through her smile, which shows a place where her two teeth used to be, and her request to play with the boy. The second stanza talks about how the two people become one, with a love that transcended time. The nostalgia for the past is palpable, with references to 'soda pop was still a nickel' and 'milk was circled on her lips.'

The third stanza talks about how their love began to deteriorate as they aged, with the couple unable to have a child. The pain of this realization is deep, and the couple's silence is shown to be heavy with the weight of their unfulfilled wishes. The final stanza reveals that the woman, his childhood love, is now the mother of another little girl. The nostalgia returns as the girl watches the man through the window, and the man thinks about his lost love. The song ends with the refrain of how he has loved her since every doll was Shirley Temple, showcasing the everlasting nature of his love.

Perhaps the saddest element of this story is that this couple couldn't have remained friends, which does occur now and then.

It would probably have been better for this gentleman to have moved somewhere where he wouldn't be passing the home of his ex-wife.🥺🤔😬🙈😫

Mr. Vinton is presently 87 years old, making him one of the longest-lived former pop "teen idols" of all time, if not the oldest.

At age 79, in 2015,
he came down with a case of shingles that was so severe that he retired from all live performing and recording. [I came down with shingles in my late 50's but the medication I was given cured it within a couple of weeks. It began with blisters forming on my left eyelid, but fortunately spread upward. I was a dealer at a nostalgia convention when I had just come down this painful disease, not knowing what it was. Actress Tippi Hedron noticed it when I was chatting with her, and urged me to get to a doctor, which I did shortly afterward, packing up and leaving the show.

My favorite recording by Mr. Vinton is "BLUE ON BLUE." His "BLUE VELVET" was terrific; however I prefer Johnny Tillotson's version.

Yes, I get choked up every time. But what kind of woman would leave her husband just because they could not conceive! There is always adoption...hello!
