At 16, Vinton formed his first band, which played clubs around the Pittsburgh area. With the money he earned, Vinton helped finance his college education at Duquesne University, where he studied music and graduated with a degree in musical composition. While at Duquesne, he became proficient on all of the instruments in the band: piano, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, drums and oboe.

After a brief spell in the US Army, Vinton was signed to Epic Records in 1960 as a bandleader: "A Young Man With a Big Band." Two albums and several singles were not successful however, and with Epic ready to pull the plug, Vinton found his first hit single literally sitting in a reject pile. The song was titled "Roses Are Red (My Love)." It spent four weeks at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Arguably, his most famous song is 1963's "Blue Velvet" that also went to No.1. 23 years later, David Lynch named his movie Blue Velvet after the song. In 1964, Vinton had two #1 hits, "There! I've Said It Again" and "Mr. Lonely", the latter now being the basis for Akon's hit "Lonely."

In the 1970s, the "Polish Prince" continued to hit the Top 40, notably with "Ev'ry Day of My Life" and "Sealed With a Kiss" in 1972. That same year, Epic Records decided to end its relationship with Vinton and ended his recording contract. Undeterred, Vinton spent $50,000 of his own money on a self-written song sung partially in Polish: "My Melody of Love." After Vinton was turned down by 7 major labels, ABC Records bought Vinton's idea, and the result was a multi-million selling single that hit #1 on the AC charts in 1974. A gold album, Melodies of Love, followed as well as a successful half-hour variety show "The Bobby Vinton Show" (which aired from 1975 to 1978). He also starred in two John Wayne movies: Big Jake and The Train Robbers.

In the course of his career, Vinton has sold over 75 million records (singles, albums, compilation inclusions, etc) and is still performing on tour and at the Bobby Vinton Blue Velvet Theatre in Branson, Missouri.

I messed up real bad and didn't marry her!...due to my parent's wishes! I thought of tge tune, hummed thru it and came uo with tge title. This was played over and over again on those little juke boxes on top of the counter at Thrifty Drug store’s lunch counter back in the early 1960s. I know because I worked there as a “box boy”/all around “schlepper” responsible for taking out trash, picking the gum off the floor, sweeping the floor and keeping the beer cooler full of booze. My first real job at age 16. Made enough money to buy a ‘57 Chevy Impala that became the go to car for the drive-in and making out with Linda Nolan, who I had a crush on since the Second Grade. Anyway, this song reminded me of those care free days.

This was the last #1 record on the charts before everything changed...the Beatles' I Want to Hold Your Hand was the next #1. My old adult ears now hear this as a very fine arrangement and vocal. According to the way I heard the story on a video, (it may have been the Beatles Chronology series) a certain DJ got the attention of Vinton at a concert and told him backstage he's got to record There I've Said It Again, it will go to number one. Bobby thought nothing of it but decided what the heck I'll record it. He did do it one take and said something like "I can't do this any better" and sarcastically echoing the DJ said "It's a number one." He was not predicting but mimicking what he was told by the DJ. But that's according to to video I saw. If anyone was actually there at either of these little events, come forward, prove you were there and straighten out the truth... perhaps the DJ was lying, who knows. But going from Bobby Vinton to the Beatles was like the Wizard of Oz movie going from black and white into color. Vinton still had some top 40 hits until around 1970. [Exception was My Melody of Love #3 1974] after the Beatles arrived....probably the only one of the teenage crooners of the early 1960's to do that. [Elvis is in a category by himself so I don't include him in that category-without Elvis...no Beatles].

I watched "Avengers : Endgame". After seeing Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter dance to "It's Been a Long, Long Time", I'm now drawn to Bobby Vinton's version of "There I've Said It Again". Seems like I also want to go back in time.
