Trouble Is My Middle Name
Bobby Vinton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello, little girl, goodbye, little girl
I'm not your kind of guy, little girl
I'll only make you cry, little girl
Trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

Each kiss, little girl, is sweet, little girl
They sweep me off my feet, little girl
But no more must our lips meet, little girl
Trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

I'm just a born wanderer driftin' by one day
Each place that I've been, heartbreak moved in
So I'll move on my way

In time, little girl, you'll find, little girl
I've been really kind, little girl
Not changing your name to mine, little girl
Trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

Not changing your name to mine, little girl
Trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

Oh, trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

FADE
Yes, trouble (trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble) is my middle name

Overall Meaning

Bobby Vinton's song, "Trouble Is My Middle Name" is a story about a man who tells a girl that he is trouble and that he will only bring heartache into her life. The song begins with the singer saying goodbye to the girl, explaining that he's not good for her and that he'll only make her cry. He then states that trouble is his middle name, emphasizing that he is a person who should definitely be avoided.

In the chorus, the singer explains that each kiss is sweet, but that they must now be separated because he is not good for her. He paints a picture of himself as a born wanderer, who brings heartbreak wherever he goes. Yet he remains hopeful that one day the girl will look back on him fondly, knowing that he had been kind to her. He ends the song reiterating that his middle name is trouble and that she should not think of changing her name to his.

The song is heartbreaking but also empowering as it speaks to the idea of self-awareness and honesty. The singer doesn't try to manipulate or persuade the girl, but instead warns her of the risk of getting involved with him. One can also interpret the song as a reflection of the singer's self-esteem issues and his belief that he is unworthy of love.

Thanks EOTFW for showing young people what REAL MUSIC is!!!
50s and early 60s best music ever!!!

That’s entirely subjective. While I do like a lot of older music, I’ve found there are just as many musical talents in this day and age. Music hasn’t gotten worse or anything, it’s just changed somewhat. But there are a lot of songs from nowadays that (although they don’t have the same sound as music from the 50’s and 60’s) are truly very good. Honestly you’re missing out.
