Bobby started in gospel with his brothers in a group called The Valentinos backed by Sam Cooke. Years later in the early 1960s he rounded his brothers up to create this song. They are his old gospel singing brothers on this song!

There is a reason for Gospel sound in this song. It is actually a Secular cover song of a GOSPEL SONG that he and his brothers recorded earlier in their careers.

The song is called "I couldn't hear nobody Pray"

And this Version of looking for a love is actually a remix. His family group under the name, the Valentino's recorded it earlier also.

Was a teen in the mid-late 70s when he had his hey day, this man is very underrated and doesn't get the props he deserves, one of the great voices of R and B, sadly missed but at least there's the great tunes he left up, one of my favorites, a rump shaker then and now....

I'm so glad I got to see this wonderful man in concert and it's just I can't even describe it but it was just like being back there with all the old greats I grew up listening to him and me and my dad used to dance to this song When I was a little girl and I got the chance to to talk to Bobby and he's the nicest sweetest man I don't care what anybody else says about him or what you read and what you've heard but he's given us a wonderful gift that nobody can ever take away!!!!!

Get up daily, turn on music choose, and some days this gem comes on. I freak out, turn it up, and rock out. It ends, I turn the volume off of music choose and rush here to play Bobby a few more times. As I am doing now. This tune gets me moving big time , Bobby rocked my world with it. This recording was, really, the very beginning for Bobby Womack. I had just started my senior year @ Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe Springs, California when I first heard this song (late Fall 1964) on the punkass AM radio in my '57 Chevy that I'd gotten the summer before my senior year started. That was a golden time for R&B music generally with so many great individual singers and groups making music but Womack, Curtis Mayfield and Major Lance were my 3 favorites at that time. Great music!

At the time "Lookin' For A Love" was at position #10 on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart, four weeks earlier it had peaked at #1 {for 3 weeks}...

Between 1968 and 1989 the Cleveland, Ohio native, as a solo artist, had thirty eight records on the Hot Soul Singles chart, eleven made the Top 10 with two* reaching #1, "Woman's Gotta Have It" for 1 week in 1972 and the above "Lookin' For A Love" ...
Robert Dwayne Womack passed away at the age of 70 on June 27th, 2014...
R.I.P. to both Mr. Womack and Don Cornelius {1936 - 2012}...

My Dad picked me up one Saturday morning back in 1975. I asked him to please take me down to the record store so I could buy the new Bobby Womack song. He actually paid for it .. about $1.00 FOR THE "45" I played it over and over and sung my heart out, dancing around the house like a maniac. My parents must have really been amused to see a 10 yr old white kid ..crazy about soul music : )

I grew up in Cleveland and would see him (Bobby ) at East Tech High School from time to time and around sixty first street and Central. You knew and could feel the aura of greatness surrounding him as exemplified by a memorable and iconic performance he displayed at Woodhill Park.

Two other versions of this song have charted; The Valentinos reached No. 72 in 1962 {this was the original version and Bobby Womack was a member} and the J. Geils Band took it to No. 39 in 1972...

Though this version was credited to Mr. Womack solo, technically this was a Valentinos' reunion and updated re-recording of their old 1962 single, as he and his brothers (all of whom constituted The Valentinos) were harmonizing on this. A definitive version, this, for sure.
