Synopsis
Nanami Takahashi welcomes the start of her high school life with great expectations of making as many friends as possible. There is much talk among the girls about a popular boy, Motoharu Yano, who has 2/3 of the girls in his middle school liking him. When Nanami asks Yuri Yamamoto, the girl sitting next to her, about Yano, the latter curtly replies that she dislikes him. Nanami is clueless of who Yano is until the day of the class nomination when she made a fool of herself by calling the name of her new friend wrongly. It turns out that she has actually met Yano along the corridors (unaware of his true identity) and he tricked her by providing a random name, resulting in the embarrassing incident in class. Nanami was initially mad at Yano but after a few encounters with him, she begins to find herself liking him.

The song "Sunset" from Bokura ga Ita is a melancholic ballad about a breakup and the struggle to let go of painful memories. The first verse uses the metaphor of the sunset and its long shadows to describe how the singer's heart has been deeply stained by the sadness of parting with a loved one. The lyrics suggest that even though the final moment has passed, the pain and tears remain, and the memories always feel too sad. However, the singer wants to forget and move on, wishing to never see the person again, but can't help gazing at their back as the last rays of the sun disappear.
The second verse reminisces about the happy times spent together, walking by the sea and taking photos, but also highlights that the promise they made to each other has remained unfulfilled, causing the singer's heart to grow thin. In the bridge, the mood shifts from quiet acceptance to a moment of raw emotion as the singer cries out for their lost love, wishing they were here to make everything better. The final chorus urges the sunset to stop, to hold onto the person tightly and never let go, even as the rain falls and paints the world a sad color.

Well here's a spoiler for for what happens at the end in the manga!! Read at your own risk!!
Basically, Yano and Nana did long distance for a year after he left. They talked on the phone alot and stuff. But then he suddenly cut contact. Apparently, his mother had cancer and died and he got panic attacks and insomnia. It was tough for him. Him and that short haired girl with glasses ended up living together but not as lovers, but as an atonement for his guilt towards everything. Her mother also died and stuff and he had to take care of her. He had so much on his shoulders. Keep in mind that Yano has come back to Tokyo and he's in the same place as Nana but he still didn't meet her.He felt guilty to be with Nana and he thought she's strong enough to move on and she deserves better. So he met up with Takeuchi and told him to take care of Nana and let them be together. Eventually, Nana finds out about all of this and she ended up meeting him. First she met him at the train station and asked him why he left her suddenly with no contact. He was shocked to see her after 5 years but he played it off lightly and lied to her and told her that he's in love with someone else and that he wanted to just dump Nana. But Nana felt he was lying. The second time is when Nana got drunk and he saw her and took care of her but she didn't remember much. Third time, she wanted to meet him for the last time to say goodbye and move on. As she said goodbye to him, he was getting emotional and told her that he doesn't like someone else and that he was lying. He told her what he'd been through and that they can't be together cuz he'll feel so guilty. She understood and told him to focus on himself and wished him the best. Fourth time, he got drunk and went to her place. They hugged and stuff and it seems like Yano was trying to make an effort to let go of his guilt, he really wanted to be with Nana and from that point they decided to meet again. Fifth time is in the hospital when he heard she got injured and he got so worried but he couldn't go quickly cuz he had a business trip. But he went and they embraced each other on the floor. Lastly, he came back from his business trip after a few days and they went to the garden and visited Nanas grave (his ex who died in a car crash). The ending was so sweet.There was some back and forth and Yano finally went back to Nanas arms. It was so sweet how they ended up together stronger than ever. It was extremely painful to get to this point tho.

Still can't get over how emotional this anime is. The manga is more depressing though. I remember feeling empty for a whole week because of this. One of my favorite anime of all times.

Wow, this throws me back. It was among the first animes I ever watched after those typical childhood animes and it actually took a toll on me.
I was really young, had never experienced love, jealousy, betrayal, heartbreak and all that but the way it was portrayed in the show made me bawl my eyes out with unhappiness. I kept going because I was aware that all romance animes ended happily.... Or so I though.
Back then, I absolutely hated how miserable it made me feel but nowadays, I appreciate how realistic it is and how it's not an epic "love conquers all" story when we know how often relationships don't work out. It's not necessarily a story you are supposed to ENJOY during large sections but it does make you feel A LOT and that isn't that common within the majority of anime (there are sad moments but rarely anything that leaves you devastated one episode after the other).
@Nemo-ne8mo
I’m feeling you so hard rn, I’m 17 and watching it for the first time in April of 2021 and it’s July of the same year and I’m still rewatching episodes, listening to ost’s, reading about a chapter a day of the manga bc this anime relates to much to everyday life that it’s just so valueable to me. I’m actually going through a heartbreak with my ex rn and it’s pains me til this day
@siene1518
@@Nemo-ne8mo Sorry to hear about your heartbreak and I hope you'll work through it soon :)
I was wondering whether I should re-watch it because I've just come back from a rather negative time and I'm trying to watch more positive shows (for now).
But I kind of REALLY want to watch it haha
@janellejarabe5342
who still remember and play this song this 2020? :)
