The kids that managed to survive were the ones that didn’t listen and refused to just stay in their rooms and die. They went against the captains orders and went up to the top of the boat where they got rescued by civilian boats. The other kids that stayed all unfortunately died because they were failed by the adults they had been taught to trust and save them. That’s why it’s important to teach children to think for themselves, it can be life or death. May they rest in peace.

The thing that frustrates me here is that in a normal rescue that follows proper protocol, it is actually best to stay in the room you’re expected to be in. Because it can impede staff and rescue efforts to have a throng of people on deck and following proper evacuation procedures, when conducted, is the best policy.

But when those procedures aren’t followed, your stateroom is the most dangerous place to be, as we see here.

I remember seeing the raw footage of the guys and girls, it was so heartbreaking. I also remember hearing about a group of girls that managed to stay alive in an air pocket for a few days, but when they contacted the police to rescue them, they thought it was fake. :/

That is so sick. The police should be held accountable in the case of those girls. It's like the Harrison Okene story, but divers actually were able to get him out because they happened to be looking for bodies. All they had to do is ask divers to check for people that may be alive. I'm so pissed off, damn. They died terribly. They watched eachother run out of oxygen and die, just because the police thought they may be inconvenienced by a prank.

Especially because those people weren't trained to do this. While the firefighters who were lost on 9/11 obviously didn't deserve to die, or be traumatized for those who survived, there is an expectation with the job that you will risk your life. They knew that. But these teachers and students were just going on a trip. The crew who didn't flee were just doing a routine job on a cargo ship. They shouldn't have even had to consider the idea of dying, and yet they gave so many more sacrifices because nobody got it together to save them, and they had to give their lives to save just the few peers who managed to escape.

After watching the STARK difference between the rescue efforts of the OceanGate submarine and Sewol Ferry just made me cry while listening to this story, and I NEVER cry. These children were failed by the ENTIRE government, most of the media, and the coast guard. They should be here now, there were SO MANY opportunities for this accident to have NOT happened at all, and after it did for all of the passengers to be rescue. I'm horrified this happened in 2014 and not 1914. It should not have happened.

They are saying they are disgusted by the stark difference, that is not the same as saying they are pissed at the US marines for not helping. As a Korean, I have to apologize. At first, I was going to say this video does not even begin to do justice to the amount of bullshit of the tragedy. I did not realize how long this video was at first, and that the sheer amount of bullshittery makes a video like this necessarily long. It was that bad. I truly appreciate your effort with this video. The retaliation done after the fact was not enough. EVERYBODY in leadership should have been straight up given a death sentence. I really like Brick Immortar's coverage of this as well if you haven't seen it. I think he might have been the first largish English speaking channel to cover it and he's the first engineering focused channel I know who did. He mispronounces almost every name if Stephanie's pronunciation is accurate but he did two feature length documentaries (part one: the tragedy, part two: the cover up) covering the story, the shipping mistakes, the rescue mistakes, and how much everything about it angers him and should anger us. It's a very different style from this but very well done.

I think smth similar happened with Japan Airlines Flight 123. They crashed into a mountain, the US had military helicopters and rescuers hovering on site ready to help, but the government was like "nah we got this bro" and the Japanese thought "yo ain't no way anybody survived that" so they launched the rescue next morning instead.
500+ people died, but there were 4 survivors.
The locals and survivors said they heard voices at the crash site all night, but in the hours that followed, they slowly disappeared...

This happened when I was still teaching English as a second language to Koreans. I remember my student said that for weeks, people outside were quiet. No one talked loudly and in a lively manner. She told a story about how in a random cafe she was in someone just burst into tears when news about it came on the TV. Sometimes she would look at her sleeping daughter and she would end up crying, too because she felt for all those parents who lost their children.

I didn’t have kids back then and I was so horrified (as everyone was, I’m sure). But now that I am a parent, it hits so different. I started bawling when Stephanie mentioned that the parents grabbed blankets on their way out. My world would probably collapse if I lost my kids.

This case was incredibly upsetting. I don’t usually cry hearing about tragedies, but the knowledge that this was 1000% preventable and the kids were able to be saved. Even if they just held a meeting at the beginning of the journey of what to do they could’ve lived. If they just accepted help! THESE WERE CHILDREN.

I saw the Sewol Ferry remembrance video, the victim's homeroom lockers were all almost locked, and seats covered in flowers. There's also a clear shot in video of an empty seat, meaning the person who sat there survived, while their seatmate was filled with memorial items. It's heart shattering shot because I bond with my seatmates despite the friendship is temporary, but knowing that I'll never meet them again gives me a dreadful amount of survivor guiltiness and hopeless feeling.

I was living in Korea with my family at the time that this happened and it still rocks me when I hear about it. I had students that were friends and family members to these kids, my heart still hurts for all these kids and their families. It was so shameful how this was all handled and how the families were treated throughout all this. Too many people trying to cut corners and point fingers at others to shift blame. So much could have been done and so many lives saved.

You know what else is sad in this story. The only students that DID survived, are the ones who didn't stay put and actually jumped off the boat. There was a woman named Park Jiyong working there who even gave her life jacket and push the students in the water just so they could live while she didn't

I’m only halfway through, but so far this video is amazing. I love that it starts showing the mindset of the kids not knowing what’s going on while facing a disaster, but then when you switch to discussing the “rescuers” the pace of the video becomes more relaxed and I can just feel the knot in my stomach getting tighter realizing the kids are experiencing time a lot faster than those outside the ship.

I remember how I was a college kid when this happened. The Philippine media didn't have a very in depth coverage about it—just a minute or two news blurbs during the night news.—but even then, I was already horrified. Hearing how it was handled and how it could have been prevented through this video, I'm sobbing. I'm so angry and sad and absolutely disgusted. So many kids lost their lives. I'm so sorry for the people who lost loved ones during this tragedy.

This leaves me and my friend so much trauma! My friend (born in 1998) lived through this traumatizing experience, she almost died bcuz she thought it would be a good idea to listen to elders since she trusted them so much. Well, eventually she went on top of the boat bcuz the whole place was flooding! Luckily, she survived but her sister unfortunately died...I remember that moment 'till this day, she would cry so hard when she would go to sleep, her family was not mentally ok, her dad was on drugs and many other bad things had happened! I will just say rest in peace to the students that lost their lives due to a stupid captain

That boy who stayed on the line with emergency services, all the way up to not being able to call his parents in the end, was what made me cry. I cannot imagine that pain of realizing that you cannot say your final goodbyes to your loved ones. I cannot imagine the pure selflessness in trying to help a literal boatload of your friends, peers, and others before your own personal matters. It makes me so incredibly angry knowing that call was made in vain, that he was abandoned by the very people meant to help him and everyone else on board. My heart goes out to every one of those who perished in this incident. May they find rest, and rest in peace.

Edit: my heart also goes out to those who survived, and the loved ones and all those affected by this tragedy. I’m sure there isn’t a day that goes by where this doesn’t haunt them in some way, shape, or form. I hope that they all find peace and healing someday

I think back to when I was 16 and how terrified and completely lost I would’ve been all alone without my parents. I wouldn’t know what to do. I’m 35 and still look to my parents for guidance in many situations. It’s equally heartbreaking and infuriating that these poor kids had to leave this earth in such a manner. Especially knowing they could’ve been saved or at least attempted to be saved, but the adults in charge were insanely selfish and more interested in having a pissing contest….oh yeah, and just straight up evil.

Ps— To those who say/said “what’s wrong with these kids” in regards to their behavior and singing The Titanic song — think back to when you were that age. I’m sure you did some things then that you would never do now. Stupid things, reckless things, inappropriate things, naive things, etc. They were 16 for crying out loud, they were not adults. They may have been 2 years shy of 18, but still about 10 years shy of actually maturing into the adults they would have and should have all became. Plus, they thought they were safe and that everything was under control and going to be okay. They weren’t aware of what the hell was actually going on and had no means of grasping the true weight and severity of the situation, because they were being lied to by…ADULTS.

(Sorry for the rant, but that one really got under my skin)

These videos always make me sad, but this is one of the few to completely make me cry. The story of how Park Ji-young refused to be rescued because she knew more children needed to be saved was what ended up getting me the most. She, only a couple years older than I am, just working part time to make more money to support her mother knew that crew was supposed to evacuate last. The captain himself ignored that. This girl who had so much ahead of her gave her life for these other children that she managed to save, most of whom were probably only six years younger than her. I'm sure she, like everyone, had the thought to accept the help- just allow one of those civilian boats to take her- but she refused, and saved so many lives that would have certainly been lost without her. What an amazing hero, who was lost because disconnected people twice her age couldn't get themselves together and admit they needed help to an allied nation.
