Boldy James was born James Clay Jones III on August 9, 1982, in Atlanta, Georgia to his parents James Clay Jones Jr. and Toni K. Broadus. In 1983, Jones and Broadus returned to their original home of Detroit, MI with their son after Jones was wounded in the line of duty serving as a police officer. They resided on the Eastside of Detroit with James’ grandmother. In 1989, James’ parents separated and his mother sent him and his younger sister to live with their father to live on Detroit’s westside on Stahelin Hell Block near McNichols Rd and the Southfield Freeway. James’ love for music came to the forefront at the age of 12, when he performed in a middle school talent show and begun writing his first raps shortly after. He attended high school at Detroit Cooley, and dropped out after the 9th grade. He got the name Boldy James from his friend from his block, James Osely III, who people in the neighborhood called Boldy. He didn’t rap, he just sold cocaine, and “I liked the name because his name was James too,” says James. When his friend was murdered he decided to carry on the name using it to rap.
In 2009, Boldy James first big break on the national scene came in the form of 2 features on The Cool Kids and Don Cannon mixtape Merry Christmas, on the songs “BBQ Wings” and ”Tires”. That was followed up by his record “Gettin Flicked” appearing on The Cool Kids’ 2010 mixtape Tacklebox. Also in 2010 he was featured on the Chip tha Ripper song “Fat Raps” remix alongside Big Sean, Asher Roth, Dom Kennedy and Chuck Inglish. Boldy James and Cool Kid member/producer Chuck Inglish are cousins. On May 24, 2011, Boldy James released his solo debut mixtape Trappers Alley Pros and Cons. The project went on to be named by Pitchfork as one of 2011′s Most Overlooked Projects. On February 27, 2012, he released his follow up mixtape, Consignment. On March 5, 2013, he released an EP titled Grand Quarters. On October 15, 2013, he released his debut album, My 1st Chemistry Set entirely produced by The Alchemist.
He has released the mixtapes Trapper's Alley (Pro's & Cons) and Consignment: Favor For A Favor. He is known for his deep voice and effortless flow over beats with a heavy bass (ie Chuck Inglish produced songs). He is also known for his appearance on J Dilla's latest album, Rebirth Of Detroit.

Heard he told on his plug, co left his cell open
Might go out in a blaze of glory, still in Hell toting
Dumping at Lucifer, Sig Sauer with the barrel smoking
That's how we know the drink hit when ain't no seal on it
Boldy still'll make a fake brick and put the smell on it
Trafficking the bag, ain't got no paper trail on it
A million dollars in cash, would you kill for it?
'Cause if I press play my niggas really mute shit
Had dog bleeding from the mouth, thick as mucus
Niggas boosting on the murkings, "We just heard a bunch of shooting"
Real underground kings, we come from the sewage
Don't let me do it to you dunny 'cause I overdo it
This murder music with Ali, he co-wrote and produced it
Coke in the microwave, I showboat when I nuke it
Snakes on the collar of my shirt, this polo so exclusive
Out in Vegas at The Mirage, shit ain't no illusion
You know who winning but of course we all know who losing
Jump with them killers off the porch, we all know who rooting
For the bad guy in the movie smoking on a Cuban
Dope sweet as a Suzy Q, I got the smokers poofing
No excuses for my behavior, was broke and stupid
Contributing, doing the devil's work on my Joyner Lucas
See it in your face, I got the good stuff
Alright
Loafing in the spot with M-box making pill flips
Spill trips, touched a couple hundred, need a meal ticket
Ghetto nigga putting up numbers like I'm Will Smith
Real shit, pack a little darker but it's still piff
Scratch and sniff, scent a magic marker way this blill hit
Still with the shits, up the stick and hit the killswitch
Crumbled up packs come assorted like some trail mix
Shellfish, bo's by the ton like a Celtic
Selfish with this loaded gun, I get you melted
Attorney left my Co-D main feeling helpless
Lost bro to murder one, all the pain I done felt it
H I done scaled it, the 'cane I done dealt it
Get popped with a brick out of state and catch a Elvis
Eldritch how long we been taking federal jail risks
Now every time the mail run, that's a 12 strip
What is this velvet? Bust at your helmet
Rip you and your OG, fuck a spell check
D.A. tried to snatch my bond bag but my bail set
Kel-Tec clip a buck fifty, put you on bed rest
Held bag, dropped out twice, never been held back
It ain't really too much shit in life a nigga failed at
Been to hell and back, came home 19 with jail tats
Now we leaving niggas at the light in them Hellcats
The lyrics of Boldy James's song "Speed Demon Freestyle" depict a gritty and unapologetic portrayal of life in the streets. The opening line refers to individuals who have broken free from the confines of prison but are still caught in the dangerous underworld. The mention of someone informing on their drug supplier, leaving their cell open, implies the betrayal and consequences that come with such actions.
The following lines express a willingness to go out in a blaze of glory, armed with a firearm and targeting the devil himself. The reference to a drink without a seal indicates the authenticity of the experience, as Boldy James can tell it is potent without needing to rely on commercial packaging. He boasts about his ability to create fake drugs and make them seem legitimate, indicating his expertise in the illegal trade.
The lyrics continue to paint a picture of a life immersed in violence and criminal activities. Boldy James declares his association with the underground world and warns not to provoke him, as he is capable of overdoing it. He mentions collaborating with Ali, likely referring to producer and fellow artist Earl Sweatshirt. Drug references persist throughout the song, along with a portrayal of themselves as the "bad guys" smoking Cuban cigars.
At the end of the song, Boldy James asserts his success in the rap game, contrasting it with the struggles and failures he faced in his previous life. The mention of leaving others behind in their high-powered vehicles showcases their newfound social status and financial success.
