Leave It
Bombay Bicycle Club Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't think it's what you're afraid of
Come in you know what's been made up
Hold you tight, words have a new sound
Reading the signs that just seep out

[Repeat: x4]
You've got to leave it, leave it, leave it, leave
You've got to

Don't you go evade me now
Come see what you've done
Each of your reasons has broken
Call it off once you have spoken
Filled to the top then split open

Repeating over and over
Now you have to leave it, leave it, leave it, leave

[Repeat: x3]
You've got to leave it, leave it, leave it, leave
You've got to

Don't you go evade me now
Come see what you've done
I've been thinking lately how
All these feelings won

[Repeat: x2]
Once you leave never come back

Don't you go evade me now
Come see what you've done
I've been thinking lately how
All these feelings won

Overall Meaning

"Leave It" by Bombay Bicycle Club seems to be a song about letting go. The repeated lines of "You've got to leave it" suggest that the singer is urging someone to move on from something that is causing them pain or holding them back. In the first verse, the singer seems to be addressing this person directly, telling them not to be afraid and suggesting that they already know what needs to be done. The second and third verses are less clear in terms of who is speaking, but they suggest that something has gone wrong in a relationship and that continuing to hold onto it will only bring more pain.

The line "Reading the signs that just seep out" suggests that there may have been signs pointing to the impending end of the relationship, but they were ignored. The line "Filled to the top then split open" is a powerful metaphor that suggests that the person's emotions have become overwhelming and that they can no longer contain them.

Overall, the mood of the song is melancholy, but there is also a sense of hope that comes from the repeated refrain urging the listener to "leave it."

First time i hear this was at early 2012 via MTV push. Back when i was Junior High. I'm not a bright kid back then, hated maths and physics but I love art back then, and my parents are the old-school indonesian parents type of parents. I always got beat up just because I couldn't understand the basics of algebra. Found this song on MTV during my mental breakdown and it gave me the positive "fighting" vibe. (Thank God I never had a suicidal thoughts back then, just a mental breakdown).

But, I'm still lazy to study and still got ass whoopin'. But then in highschool (2013), I got bored with this song. Since I got bored with my usual "anti depressant" song, in my mind I'm like
"Shit, now I'm only got 2 option. Be lazy and find another uplifting-ballady type of song, or accept the fact that the reason I got my ass whooped is because I'm to lazy to care for my own self"

Hence, I choose the later. Started visiting my teacher office to re-understand everything (I even re-learn how to do simple equation).

Fast forward. Yesterday is my graduation day, and just received my bachelor in science (civil engineering). And I was having flashbacks and then I remember this song but forgot the title. So I searched it and boom found it. Damn, it bring tears to my eyes. The last time I cry was when I see my parents cry of joy the first time I showed them my first ever perfect score, I believe it was stoichiometry.

Whenever I told my friends my story, they just didn't believe me that I was dumb as fuck back then, untill i showed them my score cards during junior high and my 1st year on senior high, that is.

Wow.... You really didn't know what life will turns out to be didn't ya. I used to hate maths, now I love to use logic and solving structural problems with the help of simple matrix equation and SAP2000.

That's my story.
What's your story?

I'm an 81 year old grandad and I know I don't have long left in this world. This song will be played at my funeral and I hope people remember me through the medium of my music taste. Can't understand how much Bombay Bicycle Club means to me!

@tima albdeiry my thoughts exactly. The Third Wheel, if you're not in this world anymore, I hope you had a beautiful funeral and know that this comment makes random strangers think of you - and gives them at least knowledge of your music taste.

this band is literally one of my favorite things in life. I have been depressed for years and every time I hear their music I forget everything. all of it. I no longer have scars on my wrists or decay on my teeth from bulimia. this band makes me so happy.
