10 Beth Rest
Bon Iver Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Errant heat to the star
And the rain let in
The hawser rolls, the vessel's whole and Christ, it's thin

Well I'd know that you'd offer
Would reveal it, though it's soft and flat
Won't repeat it, cull and coffers that
For the soffit, hang this homeward
Pry it open with your love
Sending lost and alone standing offers

It is steep, it is stone
Such recovery
From the daily press, the deepest nest, in keeper's keep

All the news at the door
Such a revelry
Well, it's hocked inside of everything you said to me

It was found what we orphaned
Didn't mention it would serve us picked
Said your love is known
I'm standing up on it

Aren't we married?!
I ain't living in the dark no more
It's not a promise, I?m just gonna call it

Heavy mitted love

Our love is a star
Sure some hazardry
For the light before and after most indefinitely

Danger has been stole away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bon Iver's song "10 Beth Rest" express a sense of confusion and uncertainty in the face of an overwhelming experience. The opening lines speak of the extreme heat of a star and the sudden onset of rain, suggesting a violent and unexpected change. The ship's hawser (rope), which controls its stability, rolls and the vessel is described as "thin," possibly indicating a sense of fragility or instability. The singer then appears to address a lover, suggesting that they have offered comfort or reassurance, but the singer hesitates to repeat what was said, perhaps suggesting a fear of disappointment or rejection.

The second verse suggests a desire for escape from the pressures of a daily routine or a social environment. The singer longs for a moment of recovery or retreat, perhaps to a place of safety or solitude. However, the news at the door and the revelry (noise and excitement) that follow suggest that escape is not possible, at least not entirely. The final lines of the verse describe a discovery that has the potential to serve the characters in the song, but which was previously overlooked or ignored.

The final stanza suggests a desire for commitment and stability, but also a fear of being trapped or left in the dark. The line "Aren't we married?!" might be interpreted as a plea for acceptance or validation, but it is immediately followed by a determination to step out of the darkness and into the light. The final line, which describes danger being "stole away," could be seen as a hopeful sign of resolution, as though a threat or obstacle has been removed.

I'm not sure what Justin's meaning of this section is but it so parallels my final devastating conversation with my then wife after I found out she had been cheating on me behind my back for so long. These are the only lyrics I even "hear" when listening to this song. And it's all I can think about when I hear it.

"Aren't we married?"
"I ain't living in the dark (of your infidelity) no more"
"It's (your marriage vows) not a promise (anymore)"
"I'm just gonna call it (calling this marriage off)"

As sad as this is to me, I listen to it multiple times a week. It's been 13 years since the event.

Errant heat to the star
And the rain let in
And the hawser rolls
The vessel's whole
And Christ, it's thin

Well, I'd know that you'd offer
Would reveal it, though it's soft and flat
Won't repeat it, cull and coffer's that
Or the Prophet, sing this homeward
Pry it open with your love
Sending lost and alone standing offers

It is steep / it is stone
Such recovery
From the daily press
The deepest nest
In keeper's keep

All the news at the door
Such a revelry
Well, it's hocked inside
Of everything
You said to me

It was found what we orphaned
Didn't mention it, would serve us picked
Well your love is known, I'm standing up on it
Aren't we married?
I ain't living in the dark no more
It's not a promise, I'm just gonna call it

Justin described this song as "'Beth seems like this really cool name for a place you just go to be in paradise forever... Eventually, you start waking up to the fact that you might be ready to spend your life with somebody and still feel good about who you are and what kind of changes you're going to go through no matter what. And 'Beth/Rest' is that reward. It's that place you get to be in for the rest of your life…" It's so cool how he depicts that place in this music video.
