Till We Ain't Strangers Anymore
Bon Jovi & LeAnn Rimes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It might be hard to be lovers
But it's harder to be friends
Baby pull down the covers
It's time you let me in
Maybe light a couple candles
I'll just go ahead and lock the door
If you just talk to me baby
'Til we ain't strangers anymore

Lay your head on my pillow
I sit beside you on the bed
Don't you think its time we say
Some things we haven't said
It ain't too late to get back to that place
Back to where, we thought it was before
Why don't you look at me
'Til we ain't strangers anymore

Sometimes it's hard to love me
Sometimes it's hard to love you too
I know it's hard believing
That love can pull us through
It would be so easy
To live your life
With one foot out the door
Just hold me baby
'Til we ain't strangers anymore

It's hard to find forgiveness
When we just turn off the lights
It's hard to say you're sorry
When you cant tell wrong from right
It would be so easy
To spend your whole damn life
Just keeping score

So lets get down to it baby
There ain't no need to lie

Tell me who you think you see
When you look into my eyes

Lets put our two hearts back together
And we'll leave the broken pieces on the floor
Make love with me baby
'Til we ain't strangers anymore

We're not strangers anymore

We're not strangers
We're not strangers anymore

Overall Meaning

The song "Till We Ain't Strangers Anymore" by Bon Jovi centers around the theme of a struggling relationship where the two partners have drifted apart and are struggling to reconnect. The first verse sets the stage, where the singer suggests that while it's hard to be lovers, it's more difficult to be friends. This could be interpreted as a reference to the fact that their relationship has become so distant that they have lost their initial connection, and it's challenging to rebuild it. The singer tries to bridge the gap, suggesting that the partner let them in and that they light some candles and talk until they're not strangers anymore.

The second verse builds on this idea, with the singer sitting beside their partner on the bed, suggesting that it's time they said some things they haven't said before. The tone is apologetic, with the singer lamenting that sometimes it's hard to love each other, but they know their love can pull them through. The verse ends on a hopeful note, where the singer suggests that rather than focusing on the past and keeping scores, they should come together as a couple and make love "til we ain't strangers anymore."

The chorus emphasizes that the goal is to close the distance between them and reconcile. Bon Jovi sings "we're not strangers anymore," which implies that the partners had become strangers at some point, but that they're working towards overcoming this distance.
