Auld Lang Syne
Boney M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

We twa hae run aboot the braes
And pou'd the gowans fine
We've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin' auld lang syne

We two hae paidled i' the burn
Frae mornin' sun till dine
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin' auld lang syne

And here's a hand, my trusty friend
And gie's a hand o' thine
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear
For auld lang syne

We'll take a cup o' kindness yet
For auld lang syne

Overall Meaning

The song Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish poem written by Robert Burns in 1788, which has now become the universal song of goodbye. The lyrics describe the sentiment of remembering old friends and good times, and suggests that we should not forget our past experiences and relationships but cherish them. The phrase "auld lang syne" means "old long since" or "long ago." The song is often used to celebrate the passing of one year and the beginning of another, and is commonly played at New Year's Eve celebrations around the world.

The lyrics in the first verse ask a rhetorical question about whether old acquaintances should be forgotten and left behind. The second and third verses reminisce about past experiences, such as running through the fields and wandering through life's journey, and include the phrase "auld lang syne" to link these memories to the present. The song then ends with a vow to raise a cup of kindness to one another and remember the good times.

Interestingly, the song's popularity vastly increase after it was used in the 1946 film "It's a Wonderful Life" with James Stewart and Donna Reed. The song was also played at Princess Diana's funeral in 1997 as it was one of her favorite songs.

I grew up listening to this entire album at Christmas time. I found it in my mother's LP collection and listened to it non-stop. I still get so many great memories when I hear the songs from it. I honestly think Boney M were ahead of their time in music with the production of this beautiful album.
