Boney M. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh
O'er the fields we go, laughing all the way
Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing a sleighing song tonight

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated at my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into a drifted bank, and we we've got upset

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Boney M.'s "Jingle Bells" are a festive and cheerful tribute to winter activities such as sleigh riding. The opening verse sets the tone for the song's upbeat and lively atmosphere, encouraging listeners to enjoy the ride and take in the scenery. The repetition of "jingle bells" throughout the song provides a playful and upbeat rhythm that reinforces the song's cheerful, holiday tone. The second verse references the traditional image of dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, highlighting the fun and laughter that come with this winter pastime. The use of the phrase "bells on bob-tails ring" adds an auditory component to the song, emphasizing the jingling of the bells as the sleigh moves.

The third verse introduces a narrative element to the song, as the singer recounts a recent ride they took with a companion named Miss Fanny Bright. The use of a named character adds a layer of detail and possibility for imagery, inviting listeners to imagine themselves riding with the singers. However, the ride is not without its mishaps, as their horse gets stuck in a drifted bank and causes the passengers to be thrown. Despite this setback, the song returns to its joyful chorus, reminding the listener that the ride is worth the occasional bump in the road.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way

Dashing thro’ the snow, in a 1-horse open sleigh
O’er the fields we go, laughing all the way
Bells on bob-tails ring, making spirits bright

A day or 2 ago, I thought I’d take a ride
& soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated at my side
The horse was lean and lank
Misfortune seemed his lot
He got into & drifted back, and we we’ve got upset

Now the ground is white
Go it while you’re young!
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song
Just get a bobtail’d bay
240 for his speed
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! You’ll take the lead

When i was 10 or 11 i found my mom crying while listening to this song. I didn't understand why. She told me "In life, we lose people and this song makes me think of them... you'll understand someday" And here i am playing this song, 2 years after her passing and now understanding what she meant
