Raining in Darling
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I can stay awake all night
But I would make mistakes, alright
And the body asks so much
Sweet thing
I give you what I reach
Taken what I had to teach
With such
With such
O, it don't rain anymore
I go outdoors
Where it's fun to be
The lyrics of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's song, "Raining in Darling" paints a picture of someone who is consumed with guilt and trying to make amends with someone they care about. The song starts with the singer admitting that they are unable to sleep at night because they constantly replay their mistakes in their head. They recognize that they have flaws and have made errors. The singer is probably concerned that their past mistakes will affect their current relationship with the person they address as "sweet thing." They offer insights and promises to make amends for their past mistakes. Despite their willingness, the singer is aware that it's hard to fall short of the demands of the body.
The chorus "O, it don't rain anymore, I go outdoors where it's fun to be," suggests that the singer is ready to let go of their guilt and move forward from their past mistakes. They want to pursue and engage in activities that make them happy, even though the circumstances may not be ideal. It could also be interpreted as a metaphor for the singer's desire to move away from the rain-soaked, sad memories of their past mistakes, and into a happy, and sunny spot.
Overall, the song is most likely about someone who has made mistakes, is trying to make amends, and wanting to move on. It's a hope that despite the wrongs one has done in the past, they can still make things right and find joy in their life.

I agree. Spiderland is merciless. This song makes the album not that depressing when all is said and done. Will gets over his funk and goes outside into the cloudless sun believing that his lover loves him, which, is enough to get him out of his "Minor Place."
