That Little Boy Of Mine
Bonnie Owens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Who cares for fame or fortune
Who cares for wealth or gold
Because I find a fortune
Within my arms I hold

A tiny turned up nose
Two cheeks just like a rose
So sweet from head to toes
That little boy of mine

Two arms that hold me tight
Two eyes that shine so bright
Two lips that kiss goodnight
That little boy of mine

No one will ever know
Just what his coming has meant
Because I love him so
He's something heaven has sent

He's all the world to me
He climbs upon my knee
To me he'll always be
That little boy of mine

And when he lays his head
Upon his pillow so white
I pray the Lord above
To guide him safe through the night

In dreams I see his face
And feel his fond embrace
There's no one can replace
That little boy of mine.

HOWEVER-----

This is the way my dad sang it to me:

A tiny turned up nose
Two cheeks just like a rose
So sweet from head to toes
That little boy of mine

Two eyes that shine so bright
Two arms that hold me tight
Two lips that kiss goodnight
That little boy of mine

No one will ever know
Just what his coming has meant
Because I love him so
He's something heaven has sent

He's all the world to me
He climbs upon my knee
To me he'll always be
That little boy of mine

Who cares for fame or fortune
Who cares for wealth or gold
God's given me my fortune
Within my arms I hold

A tiny turned up nose
Two cheeks just like a rose

So sweet from head to toes
That little boy of mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bonnie Owens's song, That Little Boy of Mine, express a mother's deep and unconditional love for her child. The opening lines of the song suggest that the mother finds no value in wealth, fortune or fame because she has found everything she ever wanted in her child's embrace. She describes the child's physical features such as his tiny turned-up nose, two cheeks like a rose, and how he is sweet from head to toe, which highlights the child's innocence and the mother's affection towards him.

The second stanza of the song expresses the mother's admiration for her child's physical attributes such as his bright shining eyes, tight embracing arms, and lips that give her a goodnight kiss. The mother shares how her child means everything to her and that she loves him unconditionally. She also expresses that her child is a gift from heaven and that his arrival has brought immense happiness and meaning to her life.

The final stanza of the song depicts the mother's protective nature towards her child, how she prays for her child's safety and protection through the night, and how she cherishes every moment she spends with him. The song's melody and words stand as a beautiful tribute to the special bond between a mother and her child, and how the love between them is eternal and unconditional.

@gabriellevantassel

my mom used to sing this to me every night. she changed it to “this little girl of mine” and we called it “at tiny turned up nose”. my mom’s dad used to sing it to her before bed when she was a kid…i have a memory of my grandpa singing it to me over the phone when i was little.

my grandpa passed away a few years ago. a few hours before he died, i held his hand and sang this song to him. i told my mom about it after he passed and she told me that she had done the same thing that same day.

This song has been through all my family, from my grandma, to my mom, and someday I’ll sing it when I have kids. Anytime I was sick or sad, my mom would always hug me and sing this song to me. 💕

After five daughters, we had our first boy, and I will never forget my grandmother (then 92) singing this to our little Owen the first time she met him. 😍

Grammy just passed away, at 98. I’m still singing this song to my boys, and will think of her every time.💞

My mom used to sing this to all the babies, she would put in "girl" if she sang to a baby girl.

@ibellmoon

At 64 years of age, I learned from my Mom that my Dad changed the lyrics for a girl and would sing this song to me. Hearing the lyrics filled a gap in my heart.
