I Believe I'm in Love With You
Bonnie Raitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know what's wrong with me
I've been foolish as a fool can be
Baby, I can't sleep at night
And I lost my appetite

Went to the doctor but he don't know
It's getting to where it ain't funny no more
Tell me baby what I might gonna do
I believe I'm in love with you

I believe I'm in love with you
Tell me baby that you love me, too
I can't fight, baby I decided
I'm in love with you

I guess this time I realize
For you baby I got eyes
Come on baby and give me a chance
All I need is your romance

You're the one I've been trying to find
Baby, baby you're just my kind
I'm telling you baby I'll be true
I believe I'm in love with you

I believe I'm in love with you
Tell me baby that you love me, too
I can't fight, baby I decided
I'm in love with you

I guess this time I realize
For you baby I got eyes
Come on baby and give me a chance
All I need is your romance

You know what I'm tryin' to fight
And I'm telling you, you're just my kind
I'm telling you, baby I'll be true
I believe I'm in love with you

I believe I'm in love with you
Tell me baby that you love me, too

I can't fight, baby I decided
I'm in love with you

Overall Meaning

In "I Believe I'm in Love with You," Bonnie Raitt sings about falling in love with someone and feeling helpless in the face of those emotions. She opens the song with a confession of sorts, saying she doesn't know what's wrong with her but that she's been acting foolishly and can't sleep or eat. She brings in the idea of seeking help from a doctor, but ultimately lands on the realization that she's in love with this person who makes her feel this way.

As the song progresses, Raitt continues to lay her heart on the line, telling the object of her affection that they're just her type and asking for a chance to be with them. She feels like she's trying to fight these feelings, but ultimately decides that she can't and that she's in love with them.

The lyrics in this song are simple, yet effective in conveying the depth of Raitt's emotions. She puts herself out there to confess her love, which is a relatable experience for many people who have been in similar situations.

Bonnie's rhythm section has that Thunderbird groove aced on this one.She and Kim are a treat together.

Such a killer shuffle by the drummer. I can't think of another song with this groove. I like it better than the Thunderbirds' studio version or any of their live versions of the tunes. Those are more like straight time, and the bass player rides the tonic instead of playing blues walking lines like in this Bonnie Raitt version. Plus, the harp licks sound even catchier and funkier at the slower tempo.
