Love Letter
Bonnie Raitt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sittin' in front of your house
Like rain in early dawn
Workin' on a love letter
Got the radio on

Got my eye on your window pane
And I smoked a lot of cigarettes
Mercy, mercy but love is strange
And you haven't even kissed me yet

Look comes to push
Push comes to shove
Shove comes to touch
Touch will come to love

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song
I'm writing you a love letter
Love letter
Got the radio on (radio, radio)

Hope you get the message baby
I know that you're gonna let me in
It's real in your neighborhood
And this is more than I'm gonna bend

Look comes to push
Push comes to shove
Shove comes to touch and
Touch will come to love

Why don't sit waitin'
Why don't behavin'
Love's waiting in the car
In the car and rain now

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song
I'm writing you a love letter
Love letter
I got the radio on (radio, radio)

Look comes to push
Push comes to shove
Shove comes to touch
Touch has come to love

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song
I'm writing you a love letter
Love letter
I got the radio on (radio, radio)

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song
I'm writing you a love letter
Love letter
I got the, I got the
I got the radio, radio

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song
I'm writing you a love letter
Love letter
I got the radio on (radio, radio)

Workin' on a love letter
Listenin' to a love song

Overall Meaning

This song by Bonnie Raitt is about a person who is sitting in front of their loved one's house, working on a love letter while listening to a love song on the radio. The lyrics communicate a feeling of longing and anticipation for the recipient of the letter to finally reciprocate the writer's affection. The lyricist uses rain as a metaphor for the writer's emotions; the writer is sitting like rain in early dawn waiting to pour out their emotions in the form of a letter. The writer mentions that they have been smoking a lot of cigarettes, which could be a way of coping with the anxiety and anticipation that comes with waiting for the person they are writing the letter to.

The writer mentions that they haven't been kissed by the recipient yet, but they are hopeful. The lyricist then goes on to say that 'look comes to push, push comes to shove, shove comes to touch, and touch will come to love.' This part of the song communicates the idea that while love takes time, a small gesture like a look or a touch can spark the birth of something beautiful. The writer expresses a sense of confidence that their gesture of a love letter will eventually yield love.

In conclusion, the song is a beautiful expression of someone putting their heart on paper in the form of a love letter while waiting for their loved one to finally realize their feelings. It expresses the longing, the anticipation, and the eventual hopefulness of the person writing the letter.

I LOVE this song, and you did an awesome job with the video, other than some typos that I noticed "Look comes to push" and "Love's waiting in the car, in the pouring rain". The original video is one of the best I've ever seen, with it's quirky camera angles and Dennis Quaid in his underwear, LOL...if you do have it, please post it, cause I can't find it on Youtube anywhere for some reason.
